So this was the full-day halibut and king salmon trip out of Seward I booked in my previous post...and it ended up on the Huntress, a shared 6-pack, Alaskan-style.

  • Started at the area for the larger 'buts, where I was set up to jig a 32oz lead head with a white curl tail while everyone else were on cut bait. Only boated a black rockfish.
  • Moved to next area for "chickens" where managed my two 'but limit with two "chickens" <= 28". Also hooked up to a dogfish (released) and another black rockfish towards my three-rockfish limit. Had switched to cut rig like everyone else since the jigging-only session of the first stop was tiring.
  • Afterwards, moved closer to shore to troll for kings. Only managed landing my third black rockfish. No one got any kings, but pinks were boated, but none for me.
  • Finally, a move back to the "chicken" spot since one person was still short on their two-'but limit. No love for him, though, by time we had to head back to Seward; he did earn the questionable distinction of being the "dogfish whisperer" of the trip with 7 (all released).

One of my 'buts is showing in the pic below (I was designated with the orange zip ties).

All fishing done until the switch over to trolling was on the new-to-me 16VSX (https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,39871.0.html) and an Okuma VSB-C-663M-MH. Everything tested and worked as expected. All that's needed for the 16VSX is a new 100lb top shot, and it will be ready for the 2025 July 5-8 SOA charter.  ;D

I'm curious: Was the Huntress formerly in Juneau? Do you know the name of the captain?

I hope the weather is better than we had on the June trip.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

Hazy sunshine. Calmer conditions in the AM, rougher on the ride back to the dock.

The full-day of halibut and king fishing was my only objective. The family chose to do kayaking while I fished.
