without the cast control, how hard is it to do this, with 4-8oz jigs, chunk bait;
good cleaning & oil bearings first, but would upgrading bearings help?
never had one, just thinking ahead
thanks

Hard to answer, how good are you at casting a conventional reel?

No need to service it, with the exception of greasing the CF drag washer, unless there are issues with the spool bearings.

I can cast my JX and HX w/o cast control well 90% of the time.  I cast 16oz well with my EX30.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

my casting ability depends on the reel; couldn't cast my Jigmaster, 4/0 is so-so but
Shimano Speedmaster III flys.

thanks for the replies; looks like i just need to practice.

Hardy Boy

Yeah just takes practice and thumb control.

.... but to get the maximum distance serious casters don't use lever drag reels.  It's all relative.

Brewcrafter

It is pretty much experience dependent.  And lever drag reels are slightly limited with casting distance anyway - but honestly the only thing that matters is "can I reach the fish?".  With the Avets that do not have cast control, I have been known to whale casts while having the lever in the "bait" position just one notch off "free" to reduce backlashes (and distance, but hey these are warmups).  Once you get a feel for it, leave it in "free".  I suck at casting but can toss my early JX (non-MC) pretty decent now on "free" with a 100 yd topshot of mono.  Like Todd says - practice, they are good reels. - john

thanks for the replies; don't suppose anyone has an extra (one) stud for the LX rod clamp?

don't know, whatever the stock length is. i'll let you know when the reel comes in

reel i got has one; if nothing else, I'll get some stainless screws & run them in from the top, (below spool) nut them off then get appropriate nuts.

hell, it'd probably be easier to spend the $14 for the kit on fleabay

Keta

I have several in various lengths, PM me when you get a length.  Free is better than $14.00.

thanks Keta; i'll let you know next week when i get it

Donnyboat

When casting, dont go for distance to start with, just consentraite, on the finger control, after you get that under control, then add distance,  good luck, keep well, cheers Don.

A trick I have used to teach casting convintional reels is pull off a bit more line you plan on casting and tape off the spool.  Wind the line back on and cast.  It avoids backlashes from hell.

well i don't need to worry about casting my new Avet or getting a post;
the reel i bought online turned out to be left handed, and it was broken!
the handle turned (when drag properly set & line pulled against light drag), so i got a refund & sent it back
to the pawn shop i got it from (full refund)

ended up getting an LX G2 6.0 MC 2 speed (for a small bit more than i paid for the LX 6/2)
now to see what happens when that shows up.

thanks for the offer Keta
