want to set this up as heavier rig a step up from my Fathom II LD30 2 speed running 50lb braid/mono;

do i need a "heavy" rod rated for 80lb string?
would 6'6" be the max for this? would want to cast some with this also

bottom fishing, chunckin' for tuna; amberjack season opens here in Aug.

thanks as usual

I feel the length is influenced by your height and the ability to pull.

The rod doesn't know what pound test you are using, the rod reacts the pounds of drag.  Fishing #50, is often #12-#17 pounds of drag.

I would look for a rod rated 40-60.

Longer rods give the leverage advantage to the fish, shorter rods to the angler.  While fishing stand-up.

You can probably fish your LX with 80#, but I would do it only if the LX was a Raptor; even then you are pushing the reel to the edge of its capability. It sounds to me like you need an HX Raptor. As for the rod, I think that for most uses -- at least in Southern California -- a 7 ft. rod handles most uses.

80# is pushing a LX beyond it's design limits and I would fish it at 40#.  If you want a Avet for 80# the HX Raptor is a far better choice.
