Folks, a friend of mine recently had this reel given to him. No identifying labels, only a "Patent Pending" and Made in the U.S.A. mark. It has characteristics of French and Swiss made reels such as the knurled spool knob, the handle tightening nut the body shape. Looks to be well made. Any ideas? Tommy?
Thanks in advance,

This is an interesting reel.  For what it's worth Using an AI tool and providing the prompt with the following characteristics: Identify the spinning reel with the words "PAT PEND. MADE IN U.S.A" underneath  the reel's foot, all silver in color, knurled spool knob, has a PUM instead of a bail and similar to a swiss made Starro.

It came back with the following and I am not saying the AI tool is correct. I never heard of the Goodell Company.

The spinning reel in question, distinguished by the "PAT PEND. MADE IN U.S.A" inscription beneath its foot, its all-silver body, knurled spool knob, and a distinctive "PUM" (manual line pickup) instead of a conventional bail, has been identified as a vintage reel manufactured by the Goodell Company. A key characteristic that aids in its identification is its notable similarity to the Swiss-made Starro spinning reels.

While the Goodell name is more widely recognized for its production of hand tools, historical evidence and collector forums indicate that the company also ventured into the fishing tackle market, producing a uniquely designed spinning reel. This reel's design and features align perfectly with the user's detailed description.
The "PUM" or manual pickup was a feature present on some early European and American spinning reels. Vintage Garcia Mitchell reels, for instance, are also known to have models with this characteristic. The all-silver color and knurled spool knob were common design elements for reels of that era.

The crucial link in identifying this reel is its resemblance to the Swiss-made Starro reels. This comparison, noted by collectors, points to a likely influence in design or a parallel development in an era of innovation in fishing reel technology. The "PAT PEND. MADE IN U.S.A" marking confirms its American origin and that a patent was pending for its specific design features at the time of its manufacture.

For collectors and enthusiasts of vintage fishing tackle, the Goodell spinning reel remains a fascinating and relatively uncommon find, representing a unique piece of American fishing history.

Good luck, I hope Tommy or someone else can help identify it.

What a complete waste of electrons, computing power, and the brain of anybody who reads it. Several more AIs will probably ingest and regurgitate it at some point.

Do yourself an immense favor and go and read about AI hallucinations.

EDIT: The reel you have there appears to be a Heddon Spin Pal No. 240, possibly one that has been polished.
Double edit: The shiny conical piece on the non-handle side appears to be a non-OEM addition to the reel.

Second edit: I'm sorry to be terse but the internet is being overrun with AI generated garbage and it makes me really quite angry. The outputs of these "tools" are polluting genuine sources of knowledge and because search engines cannot easily differentiate real from GenAI puke it has made finding obscure information a truly excruciating task. The rapidness with which this has occurred is just incredible, and I have seen first-hand the absolute mental decay of humans that have begun unquestioningly trusting outputs which are not worth pixels used to display them. Truly I worry that it heralds an age of the death of information, and I'm mad about it.

I found myself wanting to say something similar to what boon had said, and I'm glad he beat me to it because he said it better.

Its a shame that making people dumber is so much more profitable than making them smarter.

I have to agree with both of your statements , you have to keep thinking , what is real and what is not . We are being flooded with B S more and more each day ..

I hear you and I don't disagree. It's part of my learning experience for work to explore different usages of AI.

Sounds like folks hear don't want to hear these responses. Unfortunately, AI has been and will continue to be part of our life moving forward.

There's so much junk on the internet, so AI takes that junk and puts some together to answer a question. Some of it may be pertinent and correct, some of it not so much. Garbage in garbage out in a faster format
My boss last week had a legal question about contract law and asked chat, he figures since it agrees with that logic and it serves his purpose he's going with the answer. There's a 100K on the line. We'll see how that works out

The proof is in the pudding.  If it is confirmed to be a Goodell reel then that's one point for AI.  It's early days and too soon to pass judgement on the technology.  You have to admit, making everyone as smart as Tommy can't be all bad.

Sorry, may have been missed in my rant:

I think it's a Heddon Spin Pal No. 240, probably polished and with the odd conical shiny thing added on the non-handle side.

Sorry, been locked out by GoDaddy for a couple of days.  🫤

Boon is correct, as far as the reel goes. It's a Heddon Spin Pal 240 circa 1954. The 240 is the PUM model. It originally came with black crinkled paint, which has a tendency to chip & peel easily. Someone polished it up nicely and added a shiny disk in the inset where the label originally was.

As far as AI goes, I avoid it like the plague. I view AI similar to highschool & college kids that have been brainwashed and propagandized throughout their residence, it takes awhile after leaving for them to learn what the real world is all about. At this point AI is only as factual and accurate as the garbage it is fed and extracts. I would much rather collect my own evidence and information and then decipher it my self with my God given ability to reason.  🤔
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
