It is also marked 535-414980 and an EM date stamp. Needs a good cleaning but seems intact other than that.

Good grief, I opened it up and found this...

You are putting together some interesting reels.  Looks like the last one is a "victim" of the "goop it" method of reel lubrication (i.e, if a little lube is good, then a ton of it will be great!)

I feel like somebody took a trowel and just filled that reel with grease. It didn't stink and was not dried out, thankfully.

Wow! That has to be some kind of record! How did they even get that much in there?

The Ted Williams reels were made for Sears? An oldie like that was made in US. That much grease looks like a China reel! I guess US reels were made by those who were below their grease quota too!

Someone treated it like they're packing a bearing. Bet there's no corrosion

The last reel I got had black looking varnish everywhere hard as a rock, could it actually be old brown grease?

The handle would barely turn,I had to put the spool back on to pull
The spindle out after I removed the crosswind screws.I soaked the spindle with Kroil 1st.After thought, maybe not the best method I could have damaged the spool doing this ::)

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get these things apart. I have had ONE reel that fought me so hard that I just tossed it in the trash and walked away from it. It was a Garcia Kingfisher of some sort that was part of a lot purchase and I had gotten disgusted with it.

I knew some guys that greased reels like that to "waterproof" them for full immersion surf fishing.  Long before the multiple water seals some reels boast today.
I too doubt you'll find any corrosion in there.
Good find!

on the upside there's no corrosion  ^-^
You know that moment when your steak is on the grill and you can already feel your mouth watering.
Do vegans feel the same when mowing the lawn?

You are on a roll with the Shakespeare trade reels! Had you been looking for awhile and they finally started showing up, or did you recently turn to them as a target for your collection?

That's what I was thinking... like how some people pack a 704 or 706 for surf fishing. Maybe this reel was used in the surf.

I don't really target the big Sea Monsters, I primarily accumulate the 2052 and 2062 variants but these started falling in my lap and I figured they are uncommon enough that I should just snatch 'em up. I started boxing up some of my 2052 and 2062 3 or 4 to a box, just to get them out of my way and make it harder for my wife to count the ones in open bins.
