Got a bunch of boxes with reels like these—-whole and functional yet perhaps the gear sleeve is a bit loose, or the spool wobbles a bit and a screw needs to be drilled out.

Do you part them out and file each useable part in their appropriate bin?

Toss them on that mountain you have growing out back behind the deck?

I have them loosely sorted according to make and model. Sometimes they get scavenged for an ongoing project; sometimes they get picked to be re-built. Curious to hear everyone else's approach.

Especially with conventional Penn reels, so many parts are are interchangeable, its not a bad thing to have reels you can salvage useable parts from
Success derives from not repeating failure

How did you get so many non-functioning reels?
Boxes and boxes.

Hey I can still count them boxes.. ;D

Some I purchased on eBay for a specific part no longer available.

Others were received in exchange for repairing a rod or doing reel work.

Yes sir—-Conventional Penn's are like the 350 Chevy's of the Reel World when it comes to replacing parts.

Some get left in totes until I get interested in fixing them, or a project build. Some I have on a watch list should that unobtanium part materialize from the aether.

Ditto what thorhammer said.  I almost never throw a non-functioning reel away (which can be a good or bad thing).

Mostly I take the sideplates and spools off and put the reel in a zip lock bag then a cardboard box.  Repaired reels go in a cardboard box.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

I save my parts reel to rebuild it later and sometimes I give it away to someone in need to rebuild theirs.

My great friend John gifted me a Surfmaster parts reel missing everything on the handle side that his friend gave him. He was a Squidder guy and gifted me a Newell Squidder 146. I kept the Surfmaster and later found a broken Surfmaster with a cracked tail plate. I replaced it with the parts reel and gave it away to my new 73 yr old young friend.

If the parts reels are Penn conventionals, or spinners, I just toss them in bins.  Same with DAM Quick, Mitchell, and ABU Cardinals.

Everything else eventually gets the cranks, drag knobs, bails, and spools stripped off and tossed in bins.

The rest of the reel just goes to the dump a couple of times a year.

No use hanging on to stuff that I'll never need or use.

This is for the modern reels since about 1985.

The older reels that are vintage —- I still hang onto those for some reason.  I just toss them into 27 quart bins.

Either get them back to life or hoard them for parts if they are too far gone. Parts are Getting more scarce and expensive with time.

Individual freezer bags with Sharpie notes on the outside, model #, what's broken or missing, etc...then in totes.

Many Daiwa reel with different model use same part as bearings ,handle , spool ,spool shaft ,bail spring ... same as Mitchell and Dam Quick , Abu Garcia bait casting handle can be use on Daiwa reel .I have about 10 baitcasting part reel and 10 spinning part reel , some have broken part that no longer available or cost too much to get it ,some broken reel foot ,these are good to keep as we can use other parts
