Alan, I just picked up a Titus Gold 15 II.  It appears to be very lightly used, if at all.  It free spools fine, but is stiff to crank in gear, and the problem gets worse with increased drag.  I called Okuma and they no longer service this series.

Do you think that this is an easily fixable problem, or is this reel just that way?  The Makairas have been great reels for me, but almost every older model Okuma that has passed through my hands has been a problem.

Sounds like a pinion bearing. Easy to fix. I service some for guys that have been using them for years.
