ok i took the line off of my Daiwa 900H......

REAL BUMMER....   amazingly there were NO signs of corrosion at the surface.....   but it is 1/2 inch thick down near the bottom?.

whats the best way to deal with this without scraping the reel to death and gouging it?

I think one of the shops I work with has a new replacement spool...that is what I would do..  Interested?

heh....

well....  it is a possibility....

but i will give it a go first.....the only reason i will is because there was some of the same exact corrosion on the frame and other parts....when i cleaned it they were as good as new....   so i am hoping ther corrosion did not actually eat into the spool.

let em give it a try first.....

so once again....  how do you attack it?

i have a wire wheel on my bench grinder.  i would go after all the corrosion and take it down to the metal, then slather on some grease and spool it back up.  if it rusts after that, then i would toss it and get a new one.

ok well it's 27 bucks from Daiwa for a new spool.    hmmmm....   not sure if it's worth it.....

maybe if i grind it down.....   and do like you say Alan.....i will be ok....

my biggest fear is that the pitting will eventually cuts the mono.....  or at least scuffs it....then when i have that 100# tuna on....I get snapped.....

Ouch. Custom by Corrosion.  If you have a drill press, you can chuck the axle, and place the other end in a block of oak-wood with a hole and grease in it, and use 80 emery, to remove the oxides and smooth out the inner surface. Reverse the spool, and move from 80 to 100 to 220 emery. All this work will eat up 27.00 worth of life-force, so I'd just buy a new spool, and reserve the life force for something else.

Might electrolysis work in this case?  I've never tried it with aluminum.
I used to be in a constant state of improvement.  Now I'm in a constant state of renovation.

$27 for a new spool is actually very reasonable considering the size of that reel.  Then, use pure carnuba wax on the spool like polishing a car before spooling.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

im not even going to bother to post a pic of it.....it's toast....

i put one end in the chuck of my cordless drill and a metal file on the other....then i did the same using a wire brush, then another smaller rounded mill bastard file.....

it actually worked quite well....but the damage was just too much.....   it's so pitted, not worth it....

you are right bryan....   27 bucks is quite reasonable....just ordered one......
