I have a 2500 that suddenly acting like a coffee grinder.  I have taken it apart and clenaed it 3 times, but it still sounds the same.  Any suggestions.

Sounds likesome of the bearings need to be replaced.

yeah, and there are alot of bearings in that reel.   :-\
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

Can you isolate the sound?

You should be able to slowly disassemble the reel and find out what region or bearing it is in.

How completely did you take it apart?

Did it sound fine before you took it apart or did you take it apart because it sounded bad?

We'll try and help :)

One decent redfish on my 2500 CI4 and it was never the same. Clean, bearing fine. Just a fact that its composite frame and rotor couldnt take that fish I think.

is it a ci4 or fj or fi or older?

Seachaser, try removing you gear and take a closer look with a magnifying glass, look for any spots that look shiny.
My reels are Penns and I also get the same at times, these are fishing tools and sometimes that's what we'll get.
Shimano makes good reels, fix it up and get back on the water.
Welcome by the way.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Seachaser

Thanks. It was great until a few days ago.  It sounds ok until I put the front part (rotor?) back on the more I assemble the worse it sounds. The spindle bearing spins OK, but could it be the culprit?

johndtuttle

was it fine before you took it apart?

Seachaser

No, it was not fine until I took it apart. I was fishing and it started making the whirring sound.  I was wondering if the clutch assembly is the culprit. It sounds fine until I put the clutch the bearing and bushing in. It gets worse the more I assemble.  Should I soak the clutch assembly? I do not want to tackle taking it apart.

Yep, you can alternatively squirt corrosion-x or wd-40 in there, give it a good spinning with the handle to work it around as both of those will remove corrosion. Let it sit, crank some more let it sit (you usually see rust colored gunk dripping out at this point...) Then soak it in Carb/Brake Cleaner (protect your skin/eyes around that stuff) to clean those out then dry it out completely before putting the rotor back on. You don't want your cleaning agent dripping south into the bearings and gears and it will strip them of protection.

It is best re-assembled dry before fishing though a tiny bit of corrosion-x is ok on the rollers. In fresh water the oil attracts dirt so leave it dry but you may need a little to protect it from salt spray depending on your use (ie leaving it in the gunnel when running).

It is not hard to rebuild it completely or open it up for cleaning if you have to...(look up a post called "Roller Clutch on Sedona" on 2coolfishing.com for a tutorial on how to do it). It's really not very hard with this nice tutorial.

The RCA is very exposed to salt water and needs regular looking after to not have trouble.

Found the culprit.  It was the main shaft bearing.  I swapped out another bearing from a junk reel and the noise went away. The bearing spun fine when clean, but must have been damaged somehow or corroded.  Thanks all for the help and the tutorials on this site.

Yea, those are pretty exposed on the stradic as well. Pop the shields on the bearing and take a look (no worries about damage now that you are replacing it). Might be worth it to see.

glad you found a solution.  ;D
