Hello everyone
Wanted to get started in given thorough maintenance to my beloved reels (mostly conventional saltwater avet shimano abu and penn but some spinning as well), and wanted to check with you guys what would you recommend to startup my "little home shop". I give to my reels some degree of care, always rinsing them with freshwater after use and oiling/greasing gears and bearings every once in a while... but so far that's where I stopped. I pulled apart a couple of reels in the past, so I am no stranger to pulling them apart, and to my best ability, putting them together. So, long story short, wanted to see what you guys would recommend to get started... and where to get them in some cases. For starters I have been hearing a lot of Cal's grease magic,  but never ran on it in my frequent visits to local tackle shops...
Thanks in advance!
This will be fun!

Hi Juan,

Just pop over to Alan's in Saratoga, and this is where you'll end up...believe me...my garage is looking just like...okay, worse, than Alan's.

Seriously,
Marine Grease
Cal's Drag Grease (PennParts or SmoothDrag)
Carbontex carbon fiber drag washers (SmoothDrag)
HT 100 carbon fiber drag washers (PennParts)
ScrewDriver
Wrench & socket set - shallow and deep well in Standard and Metric
Alan's Penn handle wrench
Alan's bearing packer
Rags
Toothbrushes (used is okay too)
Acid brushes
Tray, like from McDonalds, Taco Bell, and the like, but not from there because that would be steeling.
ReelX
Corrosion X
TSI321
TSE301
Locking forcepts, 6 or 8 inches
Dental picks or hooks 9for removing shields on bearings
Bearing pullers (hand made)
Small 100 psi or so air compressor
WD40
Carborator Cleaner
A work table if you are married (DO NOT USE YOUR DINING TABLE!!!  WE HAVE ALL GOTTEN INTO TROUBLE WITH OUR WIVES)
Beer, Scotch, Sake,... what ever you need to calm down when the reel does not come apart or come together as it should.
Ziplock bags to hold your reels and parts when you have  the reel apart and you need a part from Penn, Shimano, Daiwa,...
Gloves (to protect your hands from all of the grease, solvents, and stuff
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

You need more than a cold one. More like 6 Or 8 Cold Ones.

I like a magnet to stick springs & E Clips to.

Bryan - I have never been in trouble for using the Oak Dining Table as a work bench.

When I replaced all the doors here I used an Ethan Allen Dining Table as my work bench for cutting doors / a Skill Saw
I have not failed.  I just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Thanks to all for the tips, greatly appreciated.
Visiting Alan's shop sometime next week, will post pictures of my little shop as I am putting it together.
First things first it seems like a continuous supply of sixpacks or a bottle of scotch is required to get started XD
Have a good weekend and tight lines

Hola Juan, what day of the week and time will you be going to Alan's reel sanctuary.  I was planning a trip down south to see him as I need a 113h left side plate in bright red (it needs to match a left handed one I am building).  I would like to meet the man with a famous name.  You don't happen to have a copy of Paradiso in English?  I will be tied up all day Tuesday but pretty open the rest of the week.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Hey Dom
Famous? did/do not know about that! Will do my best to stop by tomorrow, things got complicated today at work. I will let you know as soon as I know for sure from work if tomorrow is good (afternoon after 2), looking forward to meet you!

Bummer, I will be on my way to Davis.  Maybe next time.

Juan: I don't see anything from Alan.  Have you checked with him to see if he will be there?  Google Jose Lezama.  He was a Cuban author and poet.  Dominick

Yeah just emailed him and I will stop by after spring break since he will be out, so maybe we can meet around that time: just in time for salmon season! Will keep you guys posted. Yeah just googled Jose Lezama... pretty good stuff but for some reason unknown to Mexico...

When I just did a few reels every now and then I was allowed in the house but now with making lure fixing reels and tying flies I am relegated to the garage.A good tradeoff I guess except during the summer when it's 110 in the shade.Start small with a few of the tools you need then expand to bigger and better things.A good screwdriver set,a bit set and a few wrenches was all I started out with years ago. This is my setup now.

Here is my little shop so far! Just finished  the TLD star 20/40s greased, lubed and new drag washers, getting ready for some kings (hopefully next week money and weather permitting).
Which reminds me, Alan, will you be around next week? Want to try and get one of those handles for my TLD star
Thanks for all the advice guys!
Next stop my dear Alvey so I need to figure out the drag washer dimensions...
