This is my first post so hopefully everything will go okay.

I have stripped and rebuilt my friends slosh 30 as someone else had had tried to service it and completely messed it up.  Having got it all working and lubed I was surprised to find there was a significant amount of lateral play emanating from the drive shaft.  I stripped the reel down again and checked the drive shaft base to make sure the nipple hadn't broken off but everything was ok.  I have checked the schematics and all parts seem to be there and in their correct positions.  After rebuilding the reel the play was still there.  I have never used or worked on a slosh before so I'm not sure if this is normal.  I've tried hunting through the internet for info to no avail.  My concern is that when used in anger the gears will get damaged.  Please set my mind at rest and either tell me everything is good or how to sort out the perceived problem.

Thanks in advance

If you could elaborate on what you mean by 'significant amount', it would be more helpful? The slight play felt should be no more than a mm or two.

When you checked the nipple at the bottom of the drive shaft for damage, you might not of noticed if the screw hole threads found on the base plate that holds the drive shafts retainer plate (key#48) were damaged? Also worth checking if the very small felt type friction washer was in place, too (key#45)?

Ps/ Welcome to Alan's neighbourhood!  ;)

For me 2mm of play seems quite significant but I think you have answered my question.   I thought there must be a spacer I'd missed but on reflection the felt friction washer is absent, I think.  Unfortunately, I have given my friend the reel back thinking it was a normal feature of the reel but I shall have another look.  If need be I'll order one from Diawa I need to get some brake blocks for him so was ringing them anyway.  I did check the plate and the threads and they were OK.

If it is used in its current configuration will it do any damage?  The play is about 2mm.

This is a brilliant site!  So much information and help.  Thank you for your quick response.

In that case, your probably worrying about nothing and it will be perfectly fine as it is. ;D

The purpose of the felt washer found below the drive shaft is to keep the friction away from contacting the graphite frame. Personally, I would rather have it there than operating the reel without it. ;)

i usually shim them to take out the play, if i can.  it's easier with a junk box full of mixed up washers.  leave it for now.  it should be fine.
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!
