newell 540 question

my dad gave me a newell 540 and i was wondering what would be the best application for this reel, yo-yo-ing, fly lining dines, bottom, or what?  i usually just go on 3/4-1 day boats out of san diego.  any input would be greatly appreciated, because the more i learn about fishing, the more i realize i don't know.  when will it end!

Your 540 will work fine for live bait, yo yo fishing, and for throwing jigs.  I use my Newell 540 for Wahoo fishing throwing jigs and bombs.
