Recently became interested in the Anniversary reels when I came across this 4/0 Wide.  I believe it was original when it came to me.

A couple of unresolved questions:

I've heard these had stainless steel gears.  This one appears to have a steel main and stainless pinion.  Is this normal?

Why did anodize the spool, leaving one side to be painted?

I've built a bunch of 113H's...the bearing cap/free spool tension adjustment on the non-handle side never seems to do it's job, bottoms out before it creates friction.  Got to be an easy fix?

How many of these were made and in what year(s)?

Thanks in advance for the info.  I built this one thinking about light sharkin'.  Came together around a Tiburon one-piece, topless frame.
Other upgrades include a 5 stack of ground flat stainless and Carbontex fiber drag washers sandwiched in Cal's, SS gear sleeve and A/R dog, ceramic bearings and round aluminum power knob.  Used the original gears, the hidden harness rings from a Baja Special and a slotted bearing cap/tension adjustment from a Penn Mag Tuned 210.

Joe, I don't know how many were made. The red spool anniversary editions were made for Penn's 50th anniversary in the 80's. The left side bearing cup should never be adjusted too tight. There should be a little side to side play in the spool. It's not really a free spool adjustment.
I know Penn advertised the main gears on the reels as stainless steel. I know they look the same as some of the steel gears. Who knows? They are stronger than the brass gears and a good candidate for a 7+1 drag stack.
Give me a call sometime. I've got several of the 114h's with the stainless hex gears and a 9/0 with the hex gears. The 9/0 will have one of Dom's frames from Tom H. soon. I'll let you try them out.

BTW, the anniversary spools I've had were anodized on the sides too. One of them did have a thumb print on one side of the spool. I'm guessing the oils from the print didn't let the anodizing take. Bob

Nice looking reel!  I like the use of the adjustable bearing cap.

Thanks for all the positive comments.  I've seen guys chewed up and spit out on forums, so sincerely appreciate the welcome.  Here are a few additional comment per your remarks...

Harness Rings - Inverting the harness rings doesn't work...they scrape the spool.  I used to cut my own, but it's an obvious cut because of the chrome plating.  The Baja Special's work without any alteration.

The slotted bearing cap used on the non-handle side is from a Penn "Mag Tuned" 210, big brother to the iconic "Penn 10".  If my brother only had one reel, it would have to be a Penn 10.  My local reel guru, Keith, gave me a Newell slotted bearing cap to try.  The threads line up great, but the smaller head that may allow for water intrusion (and they just don't look right).

Hope this clarifies.
