When I got home paying work was piled up (and not just my parts that I'm behind on) and today I got a large order for topshots.  Funding for ATLR v.ii is coming in faster than anticipated.

Strong is the Dark Side...give in, you must not.

Those are nice reels.  Essentially the same as the Torq 25NLD except with a graphite composite frame.

These are cast metal frame not graphite.  The graphite version is the squall.  I think between the fathom and teh torque, I would rather pay up an extra 150-200 to get the torque 2 speed.  I assumed the pricing will be around $300 - $350.

Well I guessed I was wrong.  $279 sounds really tempting.  It will be competing in that price class with the andros, saltist, and 2 speed avets.

Oh yeah, I was thinking of the squall frames.  You are right!!!

Personally, I would get the Fathon 25NLD 2 speed over saltist and 2 speed avets...

put your wallets away and step away from the keyboard.  fill the coffee can labeled "trip" before buying new toys.   we are working on a date for a 6 day trip in september.  it is possible that guadalupe might be open by then.  um, you didn't hear anything about guadalupe from me.....   

I think I need one or two... 25n and maybe the 40n too.

If I remember right, it was recommended to include a smaller 2-speed reel in the arsenal for the recent SOA trip.  Would these Fathoms fit the bill?

yes, and yes!  this would be a perfect reel for one of these trips!

ryan, for the type of fishing that we do, there are two reels that stand out.  the first was the okuma makaira 10 with good freespool at 27 pounds of drag.  the second one came along 3-4 years later.  it's the penn torque 25N II.  performance wise, it is every bit the equal to the makaira, but it costs $100 more.  still, if you are a sucker for penn gold like i am, it's hard to resist. 

now, as far as the fathom goes, if the design is even halfway close, it will be an absolute winner.  it is also the perfect size for the type of fishing that we do.

Will do. The preorders will start when ICAST begins in a few weeks. Just to give an idea though, Free Shipping to the USA. Free Berkley Big Game Mono pre-spooled on the reel OR 1/2 OFF PowerPro Braid pre-spooled on the reel are the promotions since MAP pricing rules say I cant advertise the reel itself as being discounted.
