Reel Repair by Alan Tani

Hi guys,

For several days I've been looking at a ship on the horizon from my home at Eaglehawk Neck in Tasmania.  I checked via AIS and found it was the R/V Roger Revelle from the Scripps Oceanic Institute in San Diego.

So I gave them a call on the VHF this morning and had a chat with the mate about their voyage. I think he was surprised to get a social call from a local.

First project is investigating deep sea wave action - undersea waves coming across the Tasman Sea from New Zealand. They're interested in these as a possible source of energy.

The second project is looking at nutrient upwellings in the area as a potential source of nutrition.

I have to hand it to these guys: they've been stationary out there for about 4 days now in very ordinary conditions of rain, mist, wind, and a decent swell. Good sea legs essential.

Because of the weather, there's been no offshore fishing for days which is a pity as 15kg+ albacore have just turned up. Not to worry, as I'm headed for Hawaii early next week. Should be warmer there!

Thanks Alan, though it's not in the plans for this trip.

Still very keen to get the family to California, maybe next Christmas but it gets more difficult to organise everyone with kids at uni etc. Really looking fwd to Hawaii though and hoping to do a charter there.

no fishing at christmas time, but still lots to do!
