Sword   season  is  coming  soon  and im  determined   to get one this  year.  Question    which reel  to use as   go to   reel.   ATD 80w  or  80  stw   either  loaded  full  with  130   hollow  braid.  Have  to   fish     bait   like   300    ft deep   with  lots  of  weight  and  wait  and  wait  and  then all h--- breaks loose.  Super long   runs   no   stops   and  massive  fish . Once  before i hooked up on  one   with   80  stw   and  it  was  not up  to  stopping the  fish  in  1000 yards. Result   reel  destroyed,  1000  yds  momoi   gone.
Would  like  to get a  different outcome  this   time   anyone have  any  thoughts  about   which reel  can take the most punishment  and keep on  ticking?  Both  are   stock   no  mods  at  all.

I like the bulletproof nature to the 80STW reels, but when you start your battle with 1/5 to 1/3 of your spool off of the reel, and you need to be cognisent of apply too much drag for the sword's soft lower jaw, you kinda start out at a disadvantage. 

If money is not an issue, go with the Accurate Platnium Twin Drag reel.

I would definately use holocore to keep the stretch, and negative effects of line drag to a minimum.

Grease all bearings, and use a wet drag.  Make sure your reels are serviced, and know the actual effective drag numbers with various amounts of line off of the reel, being run through the rod.

Or forget the sporting aspect and get a Lingren Pittman commercial electric reel.

How are you fishing for them and where are you located? If you are day timing (deep dropping) than the  80 wide would give you the capacity for fishing the depths 1200-2000'. If you are night time fishing within 300' of the surface, a 50w would be sufficient except for the rare 500lb + fish. If you are deep dropping , they make reel crankies for the Penn, not sure if they make them for the Accurate.. Not fun to hand crank a 10-15lb lead sinker up without electric assistance. Generally if you hook a sword deep dropping, they will swim with the weight to the surface trying to shed it. It is the bait checks and no bite times when you do not want to crank that weight up a third of a mile by hand.

I have been using a 80W 500m 130lb solid then 1200yards JB hollow then 150lb topshot 400lb wind on leader I use a concrete weight with a breakaway so you dont have to wind it back up. Had three drops so far. Had a bite on the first drop but no hookup. No luck Yet ,will keep trying

I use a Tiagra 50WLRSA for Swordfishing without any problems at all. We do use the "Reel Crankie" to retrieve the line and bait.

after being  spooled once myself (80stw/mono) and  watching it happen twice more to other folks  (50w/mono)  i have no  confidence  that  my   50w    will   get it   done  for me even  with    braid.
So i   got  me   the biggest thing i  could afford and loaded it   with 130 cortland braid. think  about   1400 yards  on both  atd  80  and  80  stw. Just   not sure which one is  the  more  bullet proof
