Reel Repair by Alan Tani

I am not good at tutorials yet but Fred asked me to post some photos of reels I have serviced this month.  I took these after a trip to Naked Island on Prince William Sound, Alaska on the 4th.  It was a single day trip with about 4 hours of fishing.  These photos were taken after I rinsed the reels and were ready to dry them.  One photo is of the 2 Charter Specials and the Okuma T20.  Others are of my Penn's, the 113 HLW, the 330 GT.  It was a fairly successful trip by my standards.  Round trip run in boat was about 100 miles.  so 4 hours running and 4 hours fishing.  Put a ~40 Butt in the boat, a silver salmon, a handful of rockfish and a great time.  I was fishing with my wife, son and daughter in law.  We all boated fish.  I had the largest and the smallest.  The halibut was caught on a Charter Special and a 6'6" medium heavy Cabala's Whuppin Stick.  It was fun and the greased CF washers did a great job.  The more I fish it the more the Charter Special is becoming my favorite boat reel.  The Okuma with a heavy stand up rod is OK for soaking bait but it is to heavy for me to jig with.

That is my preferred size for Halibut -- the big ones are nice (90-150 lbs.) -- but they are generally a female, 20 to 50 years old -- good breeders and egg layers.  25 to 35 pounds is optimum for me.  The size you caught are really good eatiing also.

I totally agree Fred.  We have a agreement on the boat, anything approaching a 100 goes back after a photo and a measurement if she is calm.  We want to keep the good breeders active and the meat is better with the small ones as you mentioned.  Ken

yeah, I wish i could  catch a 40 lb flounda!!!! nice job!!

we used to use Charter Specials for stripers....GREAT application live baiting or on downrigger. I think they are the only levelwind lever drag as i know of and maybe folks scratch their head what to do with them, but solid reels IMO.

Right now level wind is a benefit as my wife and grandkids learn to fish.  That is the reason I bought her a 330 GT instead of a 114.  One less thing to think of, the same with the little ones.  I will probably buy a couple of Alan's frames this winter to have on hand.  I enjoy fishing with my wife, and not only because it is easier to go.  Ken
