Reel Repair by Alan Tani

Been reel busy lately and been itchin' for a new project & then this fell into my hands about an hour ago  My first Newell! Super clean S533 5.5...What do I have ? Specs, drag capability...What is it good for? 40#?, ect... I know we got some Newell nuts around here that can shed some light. What's it worth? I gave a $100 bill for it and thought it was more than fair...What say to you?

Used to be the standard Wahoo reel with 40-50#.  Looks like a later S since it has the stainless bearing caps.  Drags are probably between a 4/0 and 6/0 in capability.  Looks clean... good deal for a C note!

You stole it. That is the go to Wahoo reel for Long Range fishing. I had a red one with a Tib frame that I put on e-bay and got $450.00 for it.

Tim did you use a gun with the $100 you paid for that reel. It looks nice & clean. The only thing I would do to that reel is a complete service & Tib. Frame. Looks like the bars have through bolts & they are known to seize & snap when service is done. There is a small alteration to the rings & there is a how to here somewhere.

I had one of these exact same reels.  I picked up for $50 at a pawn shop.  I upgraded it with a tib frame, spool, drag stack, ceramic bearings, SS handle arm, and a power knob.  Turned out great.  

I made someone very, very happy by selling it at a steal....

O, how young and naive I was back then (3 years ago).

Man I wish I would have kept that reel.  

Don't make the same mistake I did...

Keep the reel, it will fish.

A good clean reel is worth $250-$350 especially with both bearing caps. 

It's essentially a 40# reel, but drags are lacking with a 3 stack.  It really needs a 5 stack, which I happen to have. 

It's a great reel.  Have fun with it.

Ya know Tim, there's something to Alan's idea 'cuz we want to see you on the boat next June! Of course, with the Newell would be good too.

With a 5 stack it will fish 40 lb fine and even 50 for the skins but if you happen to get picked up by a 90 lb or plus tuna when fishing it you will have your hands full with the 5.5 gears. People liked this speed reel here on the left coast for wahoo when fishing either bombs or iron as it has a fast retrieve for ripping the artificial's and seeing these fish give up the fight fairly fast it won't stress you or your gear out too much. You could use this reel for fishing the yoyo iron for tuna or tails also.

Anyway nice score for a hundo.

Here ya go. 1st. time in a Newell. Very clean, maybe been fished   Sorry Alan this ones a keeper, just got find other ways to stuff the coffee can (I'm looking real good for next June)
