Reel 224

I have two reels that I have upgraded to the heaver spacer sleeves one is a SurfMaster 200 the other a JigMaster 500, the 200 after installation is working fine and has tightened the slop that was there with the stock spacer. The 500 first of all seams to be tighter in the crank housing and the gear sleeve doesn't seam to be centered in the opening by a slight margin, I have loosened the four bridge screws to try and readjust the alignment, it has improved slightly. But if I tighten the drag adjustment down the cranking gets a bit more tension and as I tighten to max drag it gets more resistance. I have had it apart and looked at the spacer for ware and it looks to me like it is rubbing on the housing that allows for the gear sleeve and spacer to be installed. I hesitate trying to turn down the spacer it this case because I'm afraid it would defeat the purpose of the larger spacer.

Has anyone else had this happen, and if so what was their solution.

I would just file or sand the plate where it is contacting to just clear the spacer. A little at a time.

Ron Jones

I agree. Use a marking agent, like a black paint marker on the sleeve to show where to open up the whole. You shouldn't have to remove much.

I'm looking at the situation and may use the fine stone wheal on my Dremel tool and a dowel with some 600 grit wet dry sand paper. It shouldn't take much. I have bluing that I can test the areas that may be causing friction on the sleeve.

Joe if its not binding too bad just put the reel to use and it will wear in on its own. I did that with a 501 that had a similar problem.  Doug

Doug: It's just a little tight but not binding, I'm still waiting for the new bridge, gear sleeve, and gears to arrive from pro challenge and ten Ill see how everything is working. I havent done anything yet because it's not that big a deal.

Joe, these parts were designed to fit snug. if your drag doesn't free itself when backing the star, you will need to do something about it, if it does, just use it, it should work itself in.
Tolerance is all over the place with the ss sleeve and plates, we can get close but that's about it. If a machinist was making all parts, it would be a different story, it is what it is. We could get the sleeves a little smaller, we did discuss it, but that would defeat the purpose.

Sal; There is no reason to change tolerances with the sleeves I was just not used to the tighter fit, in fact I broke the reel down and cleaned up the main gear and all of the parts connecting to the bridge, including the old drag set...which was in dire need of cleaning. I'm glad I have a new bridge and SS gears along with the new SS sleeve coming. I also have the 5 stack drag system from Bryan. The old set is not in the greatest shape, there is some pitting on the back side of the main gear that took some elbow grease to clean up. Just did that today for something to do I was getting bored sitting around the house. everything is fine so no need to make any changes.

Joe, you should be ok with it.
When I said the tolerance is all over the place, I meant with some of the gear sleeves and not the custom spacers.
Before production, I checked dozens of Black Pearl's custom spacers and they were pretty consistent.
At times you will find that the same spacer won't fit over some the gear sleeves.

As I mentioned earlier, let me know if you need anything  from me.

Thank you Sal, I hope I'm able to do this one on my own because I know this is just the beginning of my love for this sport and hobby. It's great to know that I have backup from you guys though.
