Here is a complete set of the most often used sizes that I use for bottomfishing here in se alaska.
Each is hotrodded with double dogs, larger crank arms and more comfortable knobs.  The main gears were milled into octigonal shapes and fitted with cf/titanium keyed washers.  I have had no problems with my work and consider the mods well worth the work and expense.     I was bored and thought others would enjoy a great trio of modified reels.

Very nice Gary. Older reels with minor upgrades get the job done, I've seen some of your pics ;).
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Yes these are the 300-400 and 600 sealine h series.  I dont think that these are still being produced.  But there are new/like new reels out there in the woodwork.   Diawa never had a good marketing strategy so the popularity waned.  Its a good thing for the late comers as they are fairly inexpensive and new parts are still available. There still are more reels i,d like to try.   Sooo I,d better get goin!

Here is a good look of the drag package in the 400h sealine trio.  The max drag was 38# but the 600 exceeded 60# but is a much bigger reel, with a very large gear.

Two years ago I landed a 245 pound halibut with the 400h.   It was fun!

Whoa..that is a nice fish.  Guess there is a reason you are known as 'The 'Butt King' around these parts.

Gary doesn't play. The man has some skills. ;)
I have been grabbing me up some Daiwa's. They are good reels.
I have the complete H series minus the 350. My Unicorn. :D

Great work Gary,

You already know I (and others) like these Diawa reels. Glad you got the tools to do it yourself (and show others with tools), you could not have picked "any" better reels to do a "minimum" amount of upgrades for such a "fantastic" performance return thats reliable. Some basic stainless steel parts would be excellent for these reels. Thanx for sharing your investment in time and experimentation in your laboratory with us Gary.

Way to go Gary,

The Daiwa H Sealine series is a tough lot of reels and so much like a Senator . The earlier Sealines were even more like an original Senator. You don't see a lot of the early Daiwa although one sold on Ebay so now you could check it out.

For those who like Penn and Daiwa.

Yes you are right about the similarity between the early penns and the early diawas.  the early sealine 400h had cross bars like the penns and plastic sideplates. Then the newer reels had stainless dog, alum sideplates, and a alum one piece frame.   that was looking good for the consumer then they fell flat on the poor marketing and the rest is history.
And even today some manufacturers are cloning others, and certainly copying design acheivements to cut corners and not re-invent the wheel,  Like stated here before Time Will Tell, as many average people just want average junk.  Maybe i,m mot average?
