Bill B

I remember the day I got mine, I was on a business trip and called home.  My son answered the phone and told me "Dad, you got a package from someone named Alan Tani (he pronounced it Tennie). I told him to open it and he said "there is some kind of dog bone thing inside".  So I am asking all those who have been gifted or purchased one, to post a photo of theirs.......Thank you Alan!!
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Here ya go:   I have over 100 Penn reels in the collection, a few of the "users" below along with the wrench.  I live on the Straits of Juan de Fuca, North West corner of Washington, and fish for Salmon, Halibut, and Ling Cod.  Most of my reels are Penns although I have a few Fin Nor, Avet, Okuma, Daiwa, Alvey, and Peetz reels along with some antique Shakespeare Service reels.  And of course my ABU collection.

I love the Penns:    109  and Mag 10 for Salmon Mooching, 9 for light salmon Jigging, 209 and 210 for medium jigging, Jigmasters for heavy jigging.   Also use 320's for the down riggers, 309 and 330 for Halibut and sometimes a 340 if I am fishing deep with a lot of weight.

So I am into a reel every few days for servicing and Alan's wrench gets a lot of use.  Along with my tub of Cal's grease!

Some of the reels have been stripped of line, awaiting service and re spooling with new line.

Lots of Penns rigged on rods in the racks below, along with the Alps rod lathe and a few years supply of rod blanks for those winter projects.

One of my fishing areas below.   Off of Sekiu in the Straits, Vancouver Island B.C. in the background.  The boat is my Mako 22.

Nice set up.

Thanks for sharing!

Also, may I ask what that narrow reel mounted on the rod hanging on the top shelf (2nd from left) might be.

Do you like the ALPS lathe?
Hope springs eternal
for the consumate fishermen.

I'm a wrench orphan stuck in the old days with a rusty penn wrench :-\. I missed the boat on the AT wrenches.

Love the Mako. Very nice fishing platform.

Penn 349.  At one time it was called "The Sailfisher"  as it was a common trolling reel for sailfish down in the SE Atlantic coastal areas way back in the dark ages.    They were used a lot in the Pacific NW for deep water halibut fishing prior to  modern reels and braid line.  Fill 'em up with dacron and head to the halibut holes!

The Alps lathe is great, but you need to buy the one with the upgraded metal chuck instead of the plastic chuck.  The plastic chuck will not hold the rod securely and the rod often jumps out.   I have an extra 4 foot bed extension for mine, as I often wrap 8 foot and 9 foot one piece blanks.

Below is an 8 foot Batson blank in progress.   50-80 pound rated, it will be used as a heavy jigging rod for halibut, bouncing 12 to 16 ounce jigs.  I will put a two speed Avet on it with 80 pound braid.  Notice the metal chuck.  I also purchased two extra rod supports for a total of five.

Another view of the metal chuck upgrade.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.-Sal
