SOLVED *****Handle harder to turn when anti-reverse engaged

Hi,

I have an Okuma Trio 20 which I recently stripped and cleaned. Now when I re-assembled it I noticed that when the anti-reverse is engaged the handle is noticeably harder to turn. Is this normal for these reels, I can't remember noticing this before I maintained it.

Did you take the AR bearing and pinion gear assembly out of the frame when servicing?

Could be that the AR bearing and its housing/components may not be seated properly within the frame.

I didn't take them out intially, but I did subsequently as I thought maybe too much grease got into the AR bearing. I presume by AR bearing you mean the plastic shroud that holds a number of steel cylinders that together form a "bearing". I took it apart again and removed, as you say I am not certain it is seated correctly although I did check that when engaged I could NOT insert the cylinder that the bearing grips on, when disengaged I could insert that cylinder and assemble the shaft, main bearing etc. I removed the bearing and checked that they re-seated and it all appears to be in order, except that there is a slight interference with the turning of the handle with the anti-reverse engaged.

I will pull it apart again and try to see if something isn't right. I'll keep you updated. I pulled another reel apart recently and it took me forever and made the mistake of removing the AR bearing and ended up with those little cylinders spread across the work surface. Luckily I have a cool little rubber mat that the BOCA blokes sent me!

With the Trio (and other Okuma reels) you have to be very careful when re-assembling the EOS gears.
There is a hole in the main gear (700) that must be lined-up with a mark on the transmission gear (705), usually a diamond mark.
Failure to do this will result in the gear train not functioning properly.

OK, I tried this again for the same result. It seems like its supposed to be that way. When the anti-reverse is engaged the plastic "bearing" outside turns and the pins are forced slightly inwards by the cam. This can only mean that there is more pressure from the pins on the inside of the "bearing" and it will feel harder to turn. Anyway, doesn't look like I have any further to go. It just doesn't feel right though.

Its a bit better than it was I cleaned it right up and gave it the slightest touch of oil.

I have several Trios, including the 20, there is no perceptible difference whether the 'ar' is engaged or not :-\
The ar bearing functions only when line is pulled against the drag. If the ar is flicked off the rotor is engaged with the handle. If the ar is on it prevents the handle from going backwards and line is paid out according to the drag setting.

OK that is good feedback, there is clearly something wrong with mine. I don't have this problem with any other reel with AR.

I found a good picture of the bearing and pawl, I can't post it here, what is the best option. Clearly though after inspecting the photo if you put the pawl in upseide down, it would clearly cause problems. I'll have to check I haven't done something stoopid.

OK, solved. You can get the pawl, the silver ring on the outside of the bearing, flipped upside down. This doesn't affect the bearing, it still works, anti-reverse works etc, but the pins get pushed onto the bushing when in the engaged position and makes the reel harder to turn. Thanks Scott and TB for your help, sent me in the right direction.
