Reel Repair by Alan Tani

There's always a number of reels for sale in the shop. Unfortunately, due to lack of room they're all stored with my personal reels which doesn't work out too well.  Everything gets manhandled!

I had one spot left for a cabinet and had bought some #2 pine from Lowes that was just about knot free. I was amazed as you just don't see lumber like that anymore! The lumber sat in the breezeway for most of the winter along with a couple side rail pieces that came from my neighbors junk pile out of an old curio cabinet.

Gracie was on my case about the lumber and the scrap pcs and said, .... throw that junk out,  ...... your never going to use it.
Of course I had to prove her wrong. The 3 pcs I kept were particle board, 5/8 thick, too thin, not deep enough, not tall enough, but they did have holes for shelves and I was determined to use them as you may have guessed why.

Basically, I ended up constructing a shell, made it deeper and taller, but had to cut a bunch of oddball filler pcs that were the full 80" hgt. The old rails were extended with an overlay of solid pine to the 80" hgt. to make 2 more additional shelves on the top. Cut 18 more shelves with the big Hitachi Miter saw and that about rounded it out.

A bit of sanding and 4 coats of Valspar Satin black. It actually came out quite nice. Shelves are adjustable and should hold about 30 reels. Total cost was $67.00. $45 was for lumber and the rest for those little shelf support inserts, paint, and odds n ends.

All that's left is too bolt it to the ceiling joist so there's no problem of it moving around.

The Breezeway is clean and I'm back in good standing at the present moment. I think it made Gracie happy as she even offered to help uncover the boat this Friday. Life is good!

Great build Lou;  I like the black color interior scheme.  I,m glad you got some help coming digging out the boat.  That alone can be a lot of work.  Butt its fun work,   
  I,m thinking about getting organized someday,  the pictures are light years away!
