I just checked, my photos are still there, although I've not added to them for over a year. I'm also hosting elsewhere. For anyone else that didn't know, 3rd party hosting is what we do when we store our photos on Photobucket and then use links in our posts to link to those photos. The forum becomes the 3rd party, or the user of the forum does, it doesn't much matter.

If photobucket decides to not allow 3rd party access to photos stored on their site this forum is going to suffer a tremendous hit when (I presume) most people will not fork up the $40/month to maintain access to those photos. I imagine the vast majority of the photos on this forum are stored on Photobucket servers.

my pics are still up on the forum, and I have uploaded many pics lately.

it would be pretty sad to see this forum as well as many others with threads almost empty of pictures from many years, at least the can leave the ones like the are (linked) and the new pictures uploaded after their revisted date with not 3rd party link allowed.

If all this is true, it could be a large pita (bread) for the site.  There is great value in having pictures on the threads indefinitely, especially ones related to tutorials and troubleshooting.  This stuff is timeless.. and will be just as valuable 10 years from now.  I imagine that other free photo sites may follow suit sooner or later.

I wonder if PB is offering a license for the 3rd parties; i.e. could alantani.com buy a license to link into individuals' galleries?  That would be a lot simpler for the site.

In the meantime, I'm uploading my photos to this site.

I see their "Terms Change" banner but all my pics are still there, and here. I'm not going to fret it, I'll just keep using it, closing the annoying ads and linking to the my albums until they actually stop the process.

Maybe it's just a scare tactic to convince you to upgrade.   ;)  Or then again maybe not  :-\  , but if they close 'er down this place sure will be devoid of photo examples.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

That could buy you (us, the forum) a little time, Andy, but when Flickr goes the way of Photobucket you'll (we'll) be dealing with the same problem, as Joe alluded to. I would bet there are hundreds of thousands of photos posted throughout this site, maybe even an order of magnitude more.... those files occupy a lot of disk space somewhere (actually, scattered amongst a bunch of somewheres with PB probably being the largest). To try to consolidate them into one location is also a very, very huge task unless it can be computer-automated; but the space will likely cost someone something.

To all of you who use Photobucket, from all of us who would like to get a closer look at your photos....  the ads make it almost impossible and it is not worth the effort.  Daron is right and Flickr is better in that respect.

Another approach may be to have Alan host the photos and we all kick in some bucks to defray the cost.  It's still too early in the game to predict how all the information and photos on this and other forums can be preserved for posterity.  Perhaps we flatter ourselves by thinking it's worth preserving.  Perhaps not.

I noticed this yesterday when I tried posting a picture of my most recent catch on another fishing forum. So I set up an account with Imgur. I have only used it to post one picture, but so far so good.

This will backfire on Photobucket, and the fallout will be fun to watch.

The way I'm understanding this is that all of my Photobucket hosted pics are going to disappear from my posts unless I either cough up $400 to photosucket...or...open a flicker or similar account and go back and edit all those posts. Sheesh! If everyone doesn't do this...the forums are going to be a ghost town! :(
I have been just uploading my pics to the site lately...and Steve is right...it allows the viewer an easy way to get a close up view. Only drawback is it's not good for tutorials...only four pics per post...and they have to follow the text...no text between pics. :-\
The pics in these posts here are very important, they're used over and over. This isn't just a gab forum, these threads are valuable info. Maybe Alan can look into more advanced hosting and charge a membership fee. Hell...I'm sure it wouldn't be near any $400 a year! I'd rather spend my money here anyways. 8)

Mo, there is a way to use links to photos on this site, inline with text and without a three photo limit. You do this by putting you photos in My Gallery first, then putting links to them n your tutorial. I posted on how to do this and will put up the link later.

I tend to agree that we want to take control of the photos so that they can remain as long as the site exists.
