What is the difference between the Mutu and the SSW hooks by Owners?  I can't figure out what these titles even mean.

SSW have a longer shaft and an out turned eye. They're better for snelling.

Then look at the Mustad 39954BLN Demon Circle Hook that go as small as a 2/0 which should be smaller than an Owner 2/0. Like the SSW, they have an out turned eye for Snelling. Mutu lights come in tiny sizes but aren't good for Snelling... if you're into that stuff.

they're different shape (always nice to have a variety)...
just go by Owner's Species Guide as a start, then adapt according to experience

Here's a few for comparison light wire mutu, regular mutu, and ringed super mutu. The SSW on the other side. The make small one too, the little one is a #6.  Both are good hooks just for different applications
Do what you can with that you have where you are

I don't know that mutu and SSW mean anything, maybe in Japanese?

I like the 5/0 and 7/0 regular SSW for fishing live squid. I don't use circles in the small sizes.

I have always thought that SSW stood for Salmon, Steelhead and Walleye as I believe that is what the design of Octopus style hooks was originally intended for. I may be incorrect though.

As far as I know, "mutu" is a bit of an anglicised version of "Mutsu" (which many other brands call these types of hooks) which is the Japanese name for the Gnomefish, Scombrops boops and presumably these hooks originated for catching said fish.
