I sold a custom made spinning rod I wasn't using so I reinvested the $ in a brand new Shimano Speedmaster 12ii! It's my first 2 speed reel and I'm excited to own something that will put me in the tuna game! I have spooled with 360yrds of 65# braid and small topshot of 40# mono which I'll attach flouro to once I get on the boat!

Nice, I didn't know you had posted this as I also posted about the same reel. Let us know how it works out.

The reel worked great! It was light enough to hold and fish all day!

I hear good things about that reel, its just one step behind of the talica just like the penn fathom is to torque.

I'm updating an old thread because I just won a new reel in a raffle... It's the bigger brother to this one!

Shimano Speedmaster 16ii  ;D ;D ;D

It's getting spooled with 80# braid and it'll get used for 50/60# bait. Not sure which rod it'll get paired up with but I'm thinking one of the Okuma PCH rods. I have a few of them already and love the way they perform and you can't beat the price.

Once I receive it I'll send it Alan for pre-use service and drag adjustment (along with my birthday gift from my wife, a Penn Fathom 40nld2) if he's willing to do it on such small reels?

I'm excited to see what it's capable of considering I landed a 110# bft on the 12ii!

Between the 12ii, 16ii and the Fathom 40nld2 I'd say I'm good to go for most sized tuna except cows! My September trip can't come fast enough :)

Pj and all, sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm having concerns with a new Speedmaster 12ii that I just picked up. The winding of the handle seems to be really "tight". I have numerous Ocea Jiggers (1500 & 2000), Tyrnos 12, 20, 30, TLD 25, and they all wind very smoothly, but not this Speedmaster. I want to use it for deep jigging 400g+ jigs at depths of 200m+, but with this extremely tight handle winding, I can't imagine I'd last very long with it. Did any of you have this problem? Is there a good fix for it? Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

I've never had any issues with my speedmaster and it's held up real well after several bft over 50# and a couple over 100#....

Sorry I'm no help

I would suspect it is a bad or overloaded pinion bearing.  Are you overloading the pinion bearing or is this happening at lower drag settings?
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

Just wanted to pop in here and ask how everyone's speedmasters have held up the past couple years. Just recently picked up a 16.

My 12ii from the original post has held up great. I sent it to Alan last year for a service and he said it was near perfect inside.

Just to be clear.... The reel only gets fished about 10 days a year. It's landed a bft over 100# and multiple over 50#, plus many 15-35# yt.

For the price I think they're a great reel!
