penn dogs...holes .no holes

just curious about the the penn 4-716 dogs..some have holes ..others don't..on some of the reels ive dug into ..whats the purpose of the hole..both seem to work in either the 714..716...

Either dog will work the same, Joe --

The later ones had a hole for the leg to go into -- which some say keeps the dog spring from jumping out.

But the traditional arrangement works just as good -- where the dog spring leg rides against the dog to apply pressure.

Both work as they should.
