This reel was in a lot purchase and is fine except the spool is loose on the level wind mechanism.  There is a clip on the shaft where the connecting rod from the main gear that level winds the spool attaches.  This clip can slide causing play in the movement of the spool. I'm pointing to the sliding clip in the photos.  Have no experience here with the Cardinal's, but see they are well thought of.  What am I looking at with this sliding clip thing??  When it is pushed to the back end of the shaft things are good and tight, when it slides towards the spool there is play in the spools level wind movement.
Thanks

What you refer to is actually a washer, not a clip. There should be little to no play where the connecting link/oscillation arm connects to the main shaft. There is a groove towards the very end of the main shaft where an e-clip goes. The rear portion of the main shaft is a little smaller diameter than the rest of the main shaft. The e-clip goes behind the #8631 nylon attachment fitting, the small washer goes in front of it. Those nylon fittings are notorious for getting brittle and breaking. It appears from your photo that the fitting is either broken on the back side or bottom where you can't see it or the holes in it, and the washer, have worn so much (which I have never seen happen) that they slide over the ridge on the main shaft. There are multiple photos in this thread that will show how the attachment, e-clip and washer should positioned.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Thanks Tommy, I went through the post on the C-7 you recommended and found a schematic online so I'll get into it a little later and let you know.

Opened the old girl up and poking around in the cavity with a magnetic screwdriver picked up the errant C-clip.  The washer sliding on the connecting rod is a paper thin one, and it deformed enough it seems to slip over the square edge onto the larger diameter section of the rod.  Poking around with a couple of mini screwdrivers I was able  to get the washer more or less back into a flat shape on the smaller section of the rod and reinstall the C-clip.  She seems to be as happy now as the day she left Sweden.  Nice Reel!! Thanks for the help Tommy  :)

Yep!  That Tommy knows his stuff.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Good deal. You and Tommy fixed it before I could open mine up to see. Of all the non-metal parts in these reels, I wish #8631 was some kinda metal. I've had to shim mine down there with extra washers to get the line to lay on the spool evenly and that'ed be my 2nd wish: an easily adjustable ossiliation system.

Pop off spools without the bulk of a spindle take some patience and finesse to get the line lay perfect. There is no way to shim the bottom of the spool and no click gear there, just a cross pin or crimped area on the main shaft, so, after there is some wear just about the only option is adding another shim washer or two. Personally, I've really never had a big issue with line lay on any of my fulcrum break Cardinals. For some reason they almost always seem to even themselves out unless there is a lot of slop in the main shaft. At that point it is probably time for oscillation arm or attachment replacement.

if there's some kind of shim/washer under the rotor, you can play with the thickness to some extent, to tweak line-lay

if there isn't, you may be able to add some thin one(s), to correct line stacking on the bottom...  if it's stacking on top ???

granted, that's cumbersome & tedious, but at least possible
