During the after trip dinner for the Morro Bay trip, Khanh our rod wrapping guru, had an old Monofil 27 that he found while trash recycling (aka dumpster diving).  He didn't want it and after looking at the sunburned exterior, chrome corrosion, frozen pinion I could see why.  Liking a challenge I took it.  After stripping off the 8lb ? Test, revealing linen line as a cushion for the 3 piece spool.  The free spool lever worked but the spool wouldn't free up from the pinion.  Ok, I have to admit I like a challenge so off to the shop for some reconstructive surgery.  All the side plate screws were free and not corroded, hmmm, if the pinion is frozen wouldn't the screws be too?  Well, out came the spool and I found what must have been 1000 yards of 50 lb mono....not really, probably 10' of the aforementioned 8lb. Whew crisis averted....the rest of the tear down went smoothly. Now what to do with the sunburned spool?  Out came the Dremel with buffing pads and compound.  2 hours of buffing and polishing turned the rough faded plates into something presentable.  I ran out of patience at this time and assembly went quickly.  The end result is a big improvement over what I started with and this old timer is ready to fish and join the other small Penns.  Thank you Khanh and next time you go trash recycling keep me in mind 😉. Wonderful little reels. A 29L-100 fits, and as Porthos can tell you, makes an amazing little 40# reel.
Great Job!

Like many of the folks here that Khahn fellow is a generous guy .....
There is nothing like lying flat on your back on the deck, alone except for the helmsman aft at the wheel, silence except for the lapping of the sea against the side of the ship. At that time you can be equal to Ulysses and brother to him.
