I found a dog laying in the parts bin and wanted to try a double dog set up on my 112 .    This turned out to be very simple to do .

The dog needed a little filing on the long leg for a 180 degree ratchet fit .

There is plenty of real estate for a dog and spring to be fitted under the bridge .

When i dug the channel for the spring there is enough material that i drilled a tunnel to anchor the rear of the spring .  { Tunnel is at 12 o`clock  and just left of the index hole in picture .  }         Makes it easier to assemble .

       picture of it assembled

Nice Going Joe .
I was just thinking about doing the same thing to my Ocean City 111 that I put an AR and Star Drag in the other day.

I would like to see that ,  AR as in bearing or dog ?

Picture of it assembled and a couple knobs for some other oc that need to be changed .

The 111 was as you prob know first introduced as the Brigantine and has neither a drag nor  Anti Reverse.
Mine has both now with a little drilling and part fenagleing .
Will post pix on my place in a bit then try and post some here or link em .

I have been kicking around the idea of making a external drag for the 112 .  This would give me more room for drag washers and frictions .    So i started mocking up a drag cup.
The stock set up is gear , friction and washer .
Aluminium  stock with a chamfer  cut to fit the gear .
Drilled holes for the ear channel ,then made the internal cut.
I did drill a 1/16 hole to pin the cup to the gear through the ear channel.
And this is the rough fit of the star and cup .

Great Idea and nice work IF you don't weaken the side plate too much . Looks like you will  be cuttin it close to the Bridge Plate retaining screws .
Now ifin you go ahead and cut out an Alminum Sideplate and made it nice and THICK ????? ::)

???    Where did you get that ?     That does not look like a stock  main bearing was used ether.

Might need to dust off the pin router now !!

Thanks Joe, The dog spring 'tunnel' or pocket idea might help with a squidder plate I've started working on. Must of missed the original post or maybe I just wasn't thinking about dogs at the time.
I'm keen to see how the 'drag cup' turns out as well - what diameters are we looking at? I'm not familiar with Ocean City reels or what max drag you would want from an OC 112.

Mike
It can't be too difficult - a lot of people do it.

The suspense is growing!  One of the most available and economical lines of vintage reels could become the new thing.  The Bay City Roller.

Well the 112 is the one i started with double dogs and i was going to chuck up and cut .
I have a bay city plate and started to chuck it in the 4 jaw .    It takes a little while to get it set up , there is a lot of offset to make the center cut .     Well now that it is set up might as well cut it .

It came out perfectly centered , so now i had to make a cut to double dog this plate .
It looks pretty good as far as there being some meat to keep the main bearing in place .

I admire your true Diligence in this adventure but I feel you are pushing the limits and are adversely  stressing the integrity of the structural design  of Bakelite especially since there is No Lip to help offset the lateral stress points since you removed it to encase the external drag .
Maybe make a metal plate with recessed holes and fit over the existing four screws for the bridge plate thus using the strength from the surrounding structure for reinforcement or use it till she blows . Damn the Torpedoes .

Stock washers are around .700 dia , and use 1 washer and 1 friction .  12 to 15 is about max stock .
I am looking for 4 to 12 pounds with a nice clean ramp up , no compression strokes on the pull ..

I believe this will still do 12 -15 pounds off the top of the reel .  I really didn`t loose that much material between the bearing and gear sleeve .      Once the band comes off it was little clean up.
