If I wanted to convert a 1973 Black 5000C to the gear ration of a 1973 Blue/Gray 5500C would I simply replace the 8701 pinion and 7072 main gear that came with the 5000C and replace them with a 4530 pinion and 4528 main gear from the 5500C?  I know years ago Abu had a kit for sale with these parts, but I'm just trying to figure out the part numbers to use.  Thanks in advance for any replies.

Allow me to rephrase my question...see the attached image that I found online.  I'm trying to identify the part numbers of the main gear and pinion gear that were included in this kit.

I have missed a ton of posts in the new site format. Did you ever figure this out? I have that kit up at the cabin with my Abu stuff. It will be next week but I can see if there's a part list on back. Immabout to install it myself on a build.

John, no I haven't figured it out yet but I would be very interested to hear if the package has P/N's listed.  Thank-you!

NO parts numbers indicated. Let us know how you make out. I have several Abu's in similar process. Would love to find the correct 6:1 set or close.

I will post an update when I get it figured out.  This all started when I tore down a black 5000C for a rebuild and noticed that the gear pitch looked different than stock.  After counting the teeth, I discovered that it had a 4.7:1 ratio so a previous owner had replaced the stock gears with different ones (I'm assuming from this kit).  Now I'm trying to reverse engineer it to determine the P/N for each gear.

Noted. I have a couple 5000C and a lot of 5500 and 6500; plus 5000 / 6000's.

I did some poking around on my lunch break and found this link.  One of the posts shows a parts diagram labeled #7088 which lists the pinion as P/N 4551 and the main gear as #4552.  However, this kit uses drag washer #7079 but the 4.7:1 gear set that I have uses the earlier #3903 drag washer.  So maybe there are two kits: one for early 5000C's which used the #5126 main gear (see attached Ambassadeur_5000C_1969 parts diagram) and a kit for later 5000C's which used the #7072 main gear (see attached 5000C 76-02-04 parts diagrams)?  As they say in Scooby Doo, "the plot thickens."
