I have a Penn 975 that is missing the threaded post that the spool tension cap screws onto.

Looking at schematics online this isn't shown as a separate part, and only shown as included with the side plate. Anyone know where I can find a new one of these posts?

Thanks.

alantani

ouch.  it's pressed in and is not available separately.  it's gonna need a new side plate.   :-\

Bummer. I kind of figured that was going to be the case, but the hole in the the sideplate, where the post should be, is clean and undamaged. That gave me hope that the post could be removed and replaced.

Oh Well. I guess this reel is going to the parts bin.

Thanks Alan.

alantani

the other one looks crooked.  no chance that you have the old pieces, huh.....

The other one is a 955. I just double checked, after your comment, and it's not crooked. I think it's just the angle of the camera.

Unfortunately I bought the 975 as is. Sometimes you buy reels that end up being a steal, and sometimes you buy what ends up being a turd. This appears to be the latter. To make matters worse I can't remove the spool. I don't know if spool shaft is rusted to the side plate bearing or not, but for whatever reason it wont pop out.

It is what it is. As you well know, sometimes buying an old reel can be an adventure.

alantani

yeah, probably the spool shaft rusted to the pinion gear.

Too bad. They still look nice.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

Hey Jenx,

If you would like to pop the plate off and send to us in Philly, I will re-stake a new bushing on there for you and return.  Let me know.

Tony is the man. Always wanted these reels. Not very common in my area.

We really need to take a moment and realize the quality of a long time company like Penn —- along with the integrity and willingness to help us —- of a manager such as Tony.

Companies like Penn have gone through many changes in recent years.  But it is the quality of folks running the show that make the difference.

These types of companies and managers do not grow on trees.

I am always impressed that a really busy guy, wearing many hats, will take the time and effort to help any of us with a small problem on one of our reels.

We must not take this for granted.

Thanks, Tony!

Tony,

That is a very generous of you, and I'm definitely interested in taking you up on that offer.

I'd like to first make sure this reel is salvageable as I'm still dealing with the spool stuck to the sideplate. Right now I have the sideplate completely submerged in WD-40 with the hopes that a long soak will help loosen up whatever is causing the problem.

If I'm able to eventually remove the spool, and there is no further damage to the reel, then I will definitely send you a PM about replacing the missing post.

Thank you very much.

Hey Jenx, I am wondering if the reel was dropped on the left side, causing enough force to crush the bearing/spindle and also pop that bushing out on the right side?  Keep me posted..

but  tony does  the  same  for  all  their  customers  with  a  major  problem.  way  back  in  history  i  got  in  a  battle  with  i  guess  a  kraken  with an 80stw  loaded  with  960  yds  moimoi. long  story  short  one  run  and  all  line  gone,  reel  is  burning  hot  nothing  works  spool  wont turn,  handle  locked  etc. since  penn  was  close  to  where  i  worked  took  it  there  on lunch  break  and  left  it.
a few  days  later  Penn  called,  reel  is  repaired  come get it.  i  scooted  right  over  id  myself.  front  desk  gal  says  the  guy  who  fixed  that  wants to  talk  with  you

ok  tony appears  what  did  that to  your reel?
i have  no idea  but  suspect  swordfish.
"ive never seen  a reel  torn  up  that  bad. i  replaced a lot  of  parts  i  didnt  charge  you  for."

ya  right

but  back then  you  got  a  detailed  invoice  of  parts   used  and  old  junk  parts.

so compared  part  numbers on  invoice  with  schematic  with  parts  pile   finally  got all  the  parts  on invoice  crossed  off  and  had  a bunch  left  over,  uncharged  for. a  man  of  his  word

total  bill 223  basically  replaced  everything  that  wasnt  gold

and  people  ask  why  i  have  6  internationals?

I'm hoping this is not the case, as I would have no idea how to fix that. The frame is in good condition, so it doesn't look like it has been dropped, but I have had it submerged in WD-40 for two days and the spool still wont come off, so maybe it isn't rust as I first predicted.

Thanks.
