ship to okuma.  it's worth it just to have them take it apart.

My Okuma parts discount is 45%

Those older reels aren't worth fixing

Doesn't sound as if in it's current state you will be fishing it as-is. May as well take it apart and see what's wrong with it. Clean off all the crusty parts; afterwards, if all appears "serviceable," re-grease and reassemble.

If functional, yea!!!

If not, then it's just time lost; you may even learn something new along the way.

Otherwise, if new parts are needed, call Okuma and get an estimate to see if it is worth it to you verses a brand new 453D. For me, $10 in new parts...sure. $20...maybe. $30+...no way--it's a parts reel.

YMMV.

Opened it up and to my surprise the reel didn't look to bad! Upon my investigation what's making noise is a small plastic wheel that originates from the line counter mechanism and spins against the main gear. It's seems the plastic grooves have worn down and no longer make contact with the main gear, at times it works and then skips. I will price out this part and see if It's cost effective.

Now that it's open, check if the drag washers are all carbon fiber or something else...

Waiting on parts, what a pain to remove the handle even after soaking it in vinegar. Wacked it a few times with a rubber mallet and of course the handle flew off and small  parts flying all over the shop >:( .

Suggesting that a good spray of WD-40 or CorrosionX and letting it sit for a time before attempting removal may be worth a consideration.

Zooming into your pic of the disassembled reel appears to show all the drag washers are carbon fiber...

All done replaced both counters on the reels $6.00 each.

I must say , that is a strange angle for the drive shaft for the line counter to main gear contact.

Won't last if you fish hard everyday, a cheap plastic wheel spining against the metal main gear after alot of use the main gear will wear it down causing it to make poor contact with the main gear.
