Pretty quiet spot here. Thought I'd ask a Luxor question: I own two 3L-A's. Both are grindy sounding. Lotsa gear noise. I also have a Langley 830, same straight bevel gears, also buzzy/grindy sounding. Am I hearing wear? Or is this just the way these straight bevel gear reels are? I've never spun a brand new one.

I have one also.
It's not very smooth.
Sal did some posts on these reels at some point. It would be great if someone could move those here to the Luxor tab.

Now that I think about it, it was Crack reels that Sal posted. They look similar.

I have some brand new Luxor's in boxes that I want to get rid of.

Will check them out when we return home later today.

Thanks, Fred. Curious as usual.

Hey Paul, have you tried anything to calm them down?

Luxor & Crack are basically the same reels. Crack took over Luxor and used Luxor's parts until their inventory ran out. Crack changed and also eliminated some of the previous Luxor models.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Since it's gear noise I'm not sure what to do beyond using heavier grease. I have NLGI grade 2 greases now. Yet to see a spanking new bevel gear reel so I wonder how much of the rattle is inherent. And... all the egg beaters I've tried have been in antique shops. :)

I have Langley's, RuMer's, Luxors, etc.

The used ones make more gear noise than the new in the box ones.

It is likely that good modern synthetic grease and a complete disassemble and service might help.

Got a few that I would like to get rid of.

2 are new in the box, never rod mounted, with all paperwork, schematics, inspection tags.  One has an extra new metal spool and (2) spare new bails.

$150 for a NIB —- $170 for the one with an extra new spool and 2 bails.
