Hi All,

Have an Avet HX Raptor that has been very lightly used (only a couple of trips and no significant fish). I have the drag set for ~22lb at strike, so not that extreme when you consider what the reel is capable of.
I noticed that the handle becomes stiff with the drag at strike, less so when you back drag off about halfway. Had a feeling maybe the reel came new with a damaged bearing. Fast forward, I have now replaced all of the bearings save for the two handle bearings - all with hybrid ceramic bearings from Fast Eddy except for right side plate bearing which I replaced with a new ABEC-5 SS bearing (couldn't find 6x17x6 ceramic to combine with other order).
Unfortunately, after reassembling, I notice the same stiffness. Maybe this is just inherent in a smaller, high drag reel without thrust bearing. I dont notice the same feeling on my larger Penn and Avet 50s, obviously a different animal with more surface area to develop that drag.
Nothing scientific here, just "feel" the bearings more at strike than I'm used to...no binding, but would hate to have that happen at the worst time.
Would you guys say that this sounds normal or is there something else I can look for?

Thanks,
Chris

The pinion bearing is not a standard bearing and the one you used will cause problems.  Replace it with a Avet pinion bearing or a after market deep grocery bearing that can handle the thrust (side load).

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

chris, this is a new bearing?  is the resistance significant or just barely noticeable?  and this is with 22 pounds of drag at strike?  i would expect perhaps a little.  it's all very subjective.   :-\

My HX Raptor has all factory bearings. I did replace the pinion bearing with a new one. I gave it the full AT treatment... open the spool bearings and lube with tsi-321, all other bearings are greased. Drag washers greased with Cal's. It's smooth with 20# of drag at strike.

Hi guys,

Bearing that I replaced the pinion bearing with is deep groove - 606-2RS, just not ceramic like the others.
Definitely subjective and not easily quantifiable. It's a noticeable difference in resistance between just barely engaged and strike. Sounds like I'll have to tear the reel down again and check the Bellevilles, etc. to make sure nothing is getting crushed and bearings are well greased.
Any specific bearings that others have had good luck with for the pinion/sideplate bearing? Will plan to replace if I open up again.

what you are describing just might be normal.  grab any other new bearing and see if there is a difference.   :-\
