"... 8,532-acre forest known as San Vicente Redwoods, found 12 juvenile steelhead trout and 15 federally endangered coho salmon fry swimming in the creek last month. It was the first time the latter species had ever been recorded there.

Truly amazing to have coho salmon within the first sampling!

Nature doing what it does best - grow things.

I'm not too surprised by Steelhead. Coho's, yeah that's surprising/pleasing. I guess they have Coho up in one of the Marin county drainages.
They have Steelhead in Alameda creek on the East side, in the bay Area(Fremont). And one of the dammed-up tributaries has a remnant Steelie population. They live in the reservoir 'till adulthood, then spawn near the entry point of that tributary, just like regular Rainbow trout.
Caught some in the res. many years ago, and they weren't any larger than regular lake dwelling RBT. Then as a volunteer, I got an opportunity to assist the Biologist with trap checking/maintenance and yup, the spawners were normal RBT size.
 Must be a SW vs FW diet thing.

I believe there are remnant populations of steelhead in the San Gabriel River, in the mountains above LA, that haven't seen salt water in nearly 100 years... Hopefully, someday their offspring can make the trek to the Pacific...
