A Eb reel clearly written Won`t crank .   Nice looking , didn`t need it , looking at the pictures I spotted some thing that peaked my interest .  So i left it on the watch list , a couple days later i got the reduced price notice . So i pulled the trigger .
What do you think may be the problem ?

Old dried out grease   Did you open it up yet?

Somebody's been inside.  Cover screw is missing and the A/R clutch looks incomplete.

I heard there's this guy out in the woods who works on these from time to time. ;)

270's are typically used in the salt.

So part of the issue could be corrosion inside.

However, in this case —- what Joe spotted was the "ball lever" for the A/R is missing.  This will cause the spring loaded dog to jam the main gear.  A new one just screws into the dog from the outside.

In addition it could be a missing the dog spring, or rusted.

A quick test would be to just lift the dog from the outside with a pick —- and see if the crank turns.

A thorough disassemble, cleaning and burnishing of all parts (including inside the sleeves and worm gear), replace the dog, dog spring if needed, A/R lever, 3 new side plate screws, lube with modern lubes, tune and adjust —- good for another 60 years.

When you open it up (you likely already have) just let me know what you need —- and I will send out the new parts, N/C, Joe.

Knowing Joe —- this was an opportunity to get a solid reel for a low price —- and Joe knows what he is doing.

Let me know.

These reels are seldom non-fixable —- and this is an easy-burger.

I would suspect just a replacement ball lever screwed into the dog from the outside — would make this nice looking old 270 work just fine.

Should be an easy fix for sure. Interestingly enough I'm servicing a Penn 710 that was completely locked up, forwards and backwards when I took it out of its box. I couldn't even turn the rotor manually. The A/R lever functioned. When I removed the side plate I could immediately see what the problem most likely was, the grease wasn't like bee's wax, it was like a 1/16th inch thick coat of varnish. I've never seen grease harden like that before. It had frozen the pinion to the main gear and also to the housing at the bearing!  :o  Keep in mind that this 710 was in very good + condition and in its original box. Imagine my surprise! It's all cleaned up now and ready to back together with no parts needing replacement.  8)

:)  Well    You are all right .    Fred gave the most accurate description .  In The picture in the first post you can see that the anti reverse pin turned a little , and is no longer able to ride up and down it is a "lock pin now , 90 degrees off "     This picture is just to show what i saw in my mind .

But if it was that easy i would not have even written about it .  The side off shows a whole different story .

I guess we all know what happen now ,  Somebody strong armed it when they should have stopped .  So i dug out the grease . the slide comes off because the screw is broken almost off flush with the shaft . The shaft did not want to come out of the drive shaft .

I used a worn down cut off wheel to give me the best shot at a slot in the broke screw with out hitting the shaft

Hmmm.  I's expecting to see more corrosion in the gear box. Did the AR lever break-off?
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

No the ball lever unscrew it self and went missing ...  There was not a whole lot of room for corrosion , the original grease plus the added for good measure grease .

I dug a lot out just to take pictures .

I Thank You Fred .   I can wait for parts because I need to put a list together for 270 line counter that needs a lot of parts .   I will PM you a list of part numbers in a few days , no rush here .

:) Today I received a box from Fred , in it was baggies of parts for 4 reels and a Yellow Work Mat !!!  ;D

Made quick work on two reels , one need a reel foot and the 265 needed a handle and bail spring .

Back to the original 270 , I installed the new slide and screw ,added a little grease and Placed it ON the drive pin of the worm gear .

Next was to install the ball leaver on the anti reverse pin .

The bail bumper was broken off, so I cleaned out the hole with a drill bit and installed a new one with the spring top .  Notice also that the line lay is top heavy .

I pulled the line off the spool and rewound it , and it came out normal for this spool .

Thanks to Fred and his parts bins , Three reel ready to be fished again !!
