Picked up this "A" in great cosmetic condition. But, like the other straight bevel-geared reels I own, it buzzes like an old egg beater! There's not a lot of handle play; She's pretty tight. But the gear teeth buzz pretty loudly.

Some people have called their old Luxor's "smooth". Might they mean "loose"? And I've listened to a couple on Youtube and they all buzz/grind in the same manner. Is this wear? Or inherent in the straight bevel gear design? I have a few now and in all there is a good amount of gear buzzing. Ever heard a bevel-gear reel that didn't buzz? (Van Staal excluded.)

I can test some when we get back in a few days.

Got a few that are new and unused in their original boxes with extra spools and paperwork.

Would like to get rid of them.

Glad to check them for noise, if it might be helpful.

Thanks, Fred.

I would be interested in one if you happen to have one of the small models: A, B, #1. It looks as though yours are the larger models?

I am wondering if it's worth pursuing another small model. They may all sound like... a box of gravel.

Just have the larger Salt Water Models, Paul —-

I bought these a long time ago, and my interests took me down a different road.

If anyone wants them, I think I paid $150 each years ago.

I will let them go for that.

Yeah, I've headed down a different path too. SW stuff I accumulated is packed away.

I checked mine for the noise. Got the A and the 1R-A here.

The two run quietly for the transmission. Sure, can't be compared with a worm wheel drive like the DAM Quick 280.

Here's a look inside the Luxor A's gears.

Advantages of the Luxor A:
Backstop works immediately and quietly and the bracket can also be folded by hand.
As a comparison, the Luxor A cost about the same money as the DAM Quick 280 back in the 50's, so not a cheap reel.

Thanks so much for checking, Walter. Upon close inspection of the gear teeth on my "A", I can see that they are just worn from use. Surprising since the reel is not all dinged up on the outside. It's darn clean. But the gears tell a different story. The edges of the distal ends of the teeth on both the pinion and main are deformed, almost coffin-shaped. This appears to be causing the teeth to click together, culminating in a constant buzz when brought up to reeling speed.

I'm sure I have an old Luxor or more laying around if you want it. Just let me know

I just picked up a model A and that thing is slick as snot.  Quiet, smooth, almost no vibration.  Popped it open and someone had recently cleaned and lubed it.  Now I have to figure out what rod to hang it on.

Paul Roberts

Very nice! Thanks for the update on my question. I guess mine's simply worn out inside. :(

Well, to be fair I have probably a dozen Mitchell 300 variants and the level of noise and vibration varies WIDELY, so it wouldn't shock me if there is variety with other brands. Perhaps wear, perhaps just production variances, who knows?
