If you want a glossy semi factory finish get some CPxtra from voodoo rods. Never used paint so couldn't tell you about that
Do what you can with that you have where you are

I'm no expert but I just finished an old solid fiberglass Cyclone rod about a week ago. I used some inexpensive white spray paint since the original color on the rod was white. I sprayed on 2 coats of white. After placing all the guides, I brushed on a fairly heavy coat of Flex Coat on the entire rod blank and guide wraps. The next day I put a second coat of Flex Coat on the guide wraps. Fished it this past Sunday and it looks fine. I guess time will tell.

I use Rust-Oleum Paints .  Paint & Primer in one is very good .   Key is to keep light coats multiple coats .   Let it dry for a week before you wrap guides on , or you may see the thread sink into the paint !!

Ready to paint and put them together .The top rod (casting rod ) made out from top part of 2 pieces rod that lost the bottom part .this for my youngest grandson that always hold spinning rod with reel on top .
the second is spinning made out of fiberglass blank and only use 45" top part of blank .Handle made out of wine cord with smallest Fuji seat seat
The third made out of 6' fiberglass blank with handle from BFS rod

I had been wanting to paint some old blanks, but hesitated.  How can you paint without the paint peeling off when the blank flexs?  Well, I took the plunge last year with an old Zebco "Sundowner" rod that had more nicks and scrapes than a kid after his first shave.  Used Rustoleum "London Grey" in a spray can.  All guides were removed.  Very thin coats, and after final coat, let everything sit for a week.  Then, wrapped new guides on.  Happy with the result; however it works, the paint does not crack or wrinkle with the rod under load.

I've had great and flexible results using a thin layer of flex coat rod epoxy with a dab of acrylic paint mixed in. Bent the heck out of the rods, including one noodle that happily goes to 180°, with zero issue. A thicker coat is more scratch resistant but probably more prone to issues from over flexing.
