I read an article stating a Mag. 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, the Russian peninsula.

Gfish, I hope you're safe.  Suspect it will hit Hawaii in 3-4 hours.

Yeah was down yak fishing today, there's alota tourists on the beach and resorts down there. Glad I  back at about noon. I live about 3 miles north of the South beach and at about 250' elevation. The roadways are very narrow here and there ain't that many of them.
Should be here about 7-730PM.
Siren alarms keep going off.

Now five minutes from the first wave and there are still people trying to move to higher ground but are stuck in traffic.  They're saying that at least some of the power poles along the coast highway will fall over and may shut down power for the whole island. Projecting three to six feet.  I tied my precious canoe to a big tree and hoped for the best.

UPDATE:  Oh..... never mind,  Nothing happened.  After the first wave I walked down to the bay to watch the second, third and fourth.  It was about one foot from trough to crest.  Similar to the 2004 and 2011 tsunamis.  What was different this time is the response from the media and hawaii office of emergency management.  Those people are on edge these days anyway and react to the maximum extent possible.  Luckily, they only have about five hours to strike fear when a tsunami is coming.  With a hurricane, they have almost five days to freak people out.

Crying wolf will eventuly case people to ignore the warnings and when a big one does hit people will die.  Realistic warnings and reporting would be far better for all.

Better to be warned and it ends up minor than for the opposite to happen. It's their job to issue a warning if there's any tsunami threat. It's your job to decide what you do with it.

Just glad it wasn't as bad as they projected.  Cheers -  :d

An 8.7 earthquake is no joke, they don't get much bigger. Certainly the potential was there but trying to predict the result with accuracy is not really possible with with the state of the science now. Ignore the warnings at your peril
Do what you can with that you have where you are

I was a little worried here.  But at 4700' if the waves get here I'm looking for a bearded old man, big wooden boat, and 2 of every animal.

Seriously I'm glad it was so little.   Could have killed a lot of people.
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

We had warnings where I work, Beale Air Force Base north of Sacramento Kalifornia.

Really! We got much bigger problems if the Central Valley gets hit by a tidal wave!

Coastal warnings I get but come on!

Buy it nice or buy it twice.

4 miles to the West of me is Kalaheo, on our one and only highway, where I used to live. There's a relatively narrow country road with lots of turns and hills that runs along a ridge and makes a nice long 2 mile loop from there back to the highway towards the East. A beautiful drive.
There's 4 short stem roads that drop down into relatively large "Mac-mansion" neighborhoods each of which have only ONE access road. An emergency traffic trap disaster waiting to happen if I've ever seen one. The $million+ homes neighborhood—-access roads are nice and wide, but not the old country road.

Ah yes, civil planning and engineering at its best. Sell 'em a slice of paradise and then they're on their own if they need to get down to the Neighborhood Center in Kalaheo(the local emergency shelter) in a hurry.

I saw where it appears the bait barge in Dana Point took some damage. - john

I am a little surprised that after warnings like these have been issued there's not decent aerial monitoring updates. Earthquakes usually don't have an effect on the airspace above. Seems like someone could be doing some fly overs to let people know severity updates & progresses.  ;)
