Cool! I was gonna remind you(if you hadn't already been doing it?) to put the side plate on before testing, as per Tommy's last sentence in post #19. The pin at the bottom of the spool axel has to rub on a flat section there, to keep the oscillation arm  from moving latterly. That one has gotten me several times.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

Sure felt like I was trying everything including that. But so happy it is working now - it was starting to become an unexpected/unwanted blood pressure test! Thanks for the good wishes.

There are times that these seemingly-simple little mechanisms will make you want to pull your hair out. Bail springs are the bane of my existence but I've had reels with other issues irritate me to no end too.

Character is doing the right thing when nobody is looking .   There are too many people who think that the only thing that!s right is to get by,and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught .

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.   Alto Mare

I'm glad I'm not alone in having that experience!

You are right- patience and making a conscious effort to be careful are instrumental at my newbie level. Dealing with a plastic 80's or 90's rear drag spinnner with 10 different kinds of screws and tons of parts right now. Patience or pile of parts to be determined!

If the handle is being tightened down on the shoulder on the main gear shaft without the thick washer between them it can flare the shoulder edge.
