The tail plate bearing cup seems to be the first thing to go, as far as the plating. I believe the bearing was not plated as well as the other parts, but that's just my opinion.

This may, indeed, be true, but that part is also the most prominent and most prone to frictional wear, so it could be a double-whammy for that plating....

Mo - you should feel great about the find now since a well patina'd one on the auction site just went for $361  :o

Your right Dan, I feel real good about it now! I'd like to have the handle nut and tail side bearing off that one though. :D

In keeping information consolidated in this thread, I'll add these two pre war 9/0s with wood torpedo handles

Hi Chris,
Lovely reels!!
I have counted 12 different variants of pre war 9/0's - I have 11, but none as pretty as those!
Those two represent the third and 2nd last changes Penn made to the 9/0's before WW2.
The one with the unplated  drilled spool was the 3rd last, followed by the change to the pegged spool.
If you have a look at the front harness of both reels you will see they both have the half circle 'D' lugs.
Sometime in 1942 Penn changed to having full circle front lugs - the last variant pre war, and continued with the full lugs post war.
So, whilst we can never be 100% sure, with it's drilled, unplated  spool and wooden handle I believe you have a late 1941 reel, followed by an early 1942 model.
Penn seems to have run out of chrome at some stage in 1941 - I have quite a few 1941 reels that lack chrome- probably due to demand from the war in Europe.
Cheers
Martin
