I'm not clear on this. The World record bluefin caught on rod and reel is north of 1400lbs and was caught off of Nova Scotia. Why are they calling this 466lb fish a world record biggest ever?

That is an Atlantic Bluefin, a different species from the Pacific Bluefin. The biggest problem is the statement:

"Markus Medak of Shearwater Fishing was able to snag the nearly 500-pound beast with the help of a fellow unnamed fisherman, on just a rod and reel."

That would disqualify it for a record, not to mention it was gut and gilled. I don't think that this is an official world record, regardless of what is said here.

David, that may be true but the article writer makes no distinction between Atlantic and Pacific bluefin. Thanks for clearing it up

Considering they ratified the Yellowfin caught on a rail rod I dare say the threshold for an IGFA legal capture is a little loosey goosey these days 

The pacific bluefin record is 907 lbs caught in new Zealand.  To qualify for igfa no other angler can touch the rod and the fush needs to be weighed intact on a certified scale. Maybe a California "record" at best.

I've never seen a 300LB Bluefin so a 500LB fish must have been massif on the deck. Biggest Bluefin I ever seen come over the rail was 270LB. I hope to join the Cow Club next season. My PB remains a 140LB'er.

The main point of the story is that it was caught off San Diego where a lot of AT.com members fish so there is HOPE that someone here may get something similar during this Super El Neno. But I agree, multiple fishermen on the same fish equals no world record. They sounded like commercial guys as well. I'm sure a bent butt rod on the rail was used, like in the Wicked Tuna TV show (Kardashian's Go Fishing is what I call that show), and that I think would disqualify if from WR consideration as well.
