Reel Repair by Alan Tani

I have just taken apart an hx raptor to grease the drag , it was getting a little jerky.
On reassembly the reel is a little stiffer to turn the handle and with the drag lever in freespool position
( even with the pre adjustment knob removed) it appears the spool locks against the anti reverse when i try to pull line off it)
I have had it apart a couple of times
But the same result every time.
Additionally it feels like i am clamping the drag plates onto the drag washer as i am tightening up the right hand side plae.

I decided to take it apart to releave any pressure thst should not be there.
With the 4 side plate clamp screws slackened off the reel hsndle snd spool turned a little, there was a clunk and the side plate closed up more easily .i tightened it up and everything works as if brand new.
What was happening to cause the problem ?

Your Avet HX Raptor likely lost free spool because the anti-reverse dogs or pinion gear alignment shifted and jammed when you heard that "clunk" that fixed it's alignment.

gary, i completely missed this thread.  is your reel working now?

Hi Alan yes the reel is working as good as new. I removed the drag pre set, then slackened off the right hand side plate screws, turned the handle or the spool sightly ( possibly even accidently there was a clunk, ( like i hear in mark mayo's videos) and the reel was noticibly easier to push the side plate to mate up with the frame.
Screwed it together,  put the drag preset back on and the reel spins freely and drag is smooth.

Might've been the pins on the inner drag plate dropping into the holes in the outer drag plate?
