Reel Repair by Alan Tani

With the up coming El Nino and the potential for lots of bad weather, I have been doing PM's on my equipment.  2 snow blowers ready, fixed two snow shovels, did the PM's on my whole house generator, fresh fuel, repairs to the house, etc. 

I pulled out my back up Coleman Vertex 7500 generator that has been sitting in an unheated basement for 3 years to do it's PM's. Needed a new battery and starter.  Once it was running, there was no power to the outlets.  Checked the breakers and they tested fine.  So off to the internet.  The attached video explains it better than I can, but basically the windings had lost their magnetic field to generate power.  The video said to plug an electric drill into the running generator,  pull the trigger, and manually spin the drill chuck.  It will produce a small electric field and prime the system.

To my surprise it worked and the drill took off under its own power.  I shut the generator off, started it and was producing power again.  Then I remembered my dad having to "prime" a new generator for an old car he had.  Yeah, it was THAT old.

Sometimes the old ways have applications in today's work.

YouTube is a wonderful thing for DIY! 20 years ago my son's laptop got dropped and the screen cracked. I found a video on replacing the screen for that model. Ordered the screen for $25 and it only took 15 minutes to replace it hitting pause at each step.

I had trouble with a Honda 4KVA generator, an electrician told me to take the cover of off the generator, give it a couple of hits with a 12 volt battery positive to negative & vice versa, all good after that, worked great, cheers Don.

Bill, all this is great, but what's it got to do with fishing reels ?

JK, just bought a new portable 3800watt that's in the shop at the lake place, should I lose power, which up here is more frequent than me actually going fishing.

My son-in-law has fixed several of the HF generators at work.He said some of the guys let theirs run low on oil & those generators  have a low oil level  switch
That goes bad.He verified the oil level jumpered switch to start,ordered new switch.

Bill needs the gennys to work on fishing reels!
