The listing said;

"This fishing reel was made in the USA! Between the 1960's-2000's. This is a salt water trolling reel. It's in really great condition. May need clutches and bearings."

Visible scratches, very little corrosion and aluminum spool. I took a chance for $34 plus freight.
I love it when they leave out of the description and the photos, the other issues, like initials carved in both side plates a small chunks missing behind the star drag. I filed a protest but will probably keep the reel.
I could part it out and more than make back my investment. Seller is not responding.

The drag stack is the 6 piece "Brake Lining" style with 1/8" thick washers.
Extra thick wavy washer was on the wrong side of the collar.
The handle side bearing fell out while I was removing the bridge screws and I was able to remove the bearing for a soak in some TSI 321.

The non-handle side bearing is hidden behind a spacer that doesn't want to budge. Is it possible to get it out for cleaning or am I wasting time?

Thanks!

Steve, sit tight; I am building the parts a member in AU sent that will get to Shibley. I may have some plates or whatnot to get yours whole without chunks missing at least, if not purty. I'll know in next two weeks if you can wait that long.

"It's in really great condition" may be slightly exaggerated Steve. I've had some luck removing those bearings after a 24 hour soak in PB Blaster, and then prying with some small pick tools. A 5" piece of coat hanger, or even 2, with a very small amount of the tip bent over in a vise has helped too. Saw in a post long ago where Alan used a Dremel to make a slight notch in the threaded cap to remove a Newell bearing. It's some time involved, so you have to decide. I'm cheap, stubborn, and have time so. Good thing is most parts are available, new and used. I'll take a look to see if I have any 6/0 parts.

Got it back together after some cleaning.
It works well. Just cosmetics need some attention.
Need to upgrade the drag, Find a new side plate.
Saving my lunch money for parts.

Looks good Steve, the plus is you have a steel main and an aluminum spool. I looked, but I only have the old asbestos drag washers as well, a brass gear, and a few screws.

You might have lucked out, that there looks more to me like a Newell spool than something Penn made.

How can I tell?
Part number?

Newell spools have a shape like no other. Thin side flanges

Heres a stock Penn 114h aluminum spool. Notice thick squared shoulder on the side flange.

...and a narrow 114h newell spool with thin rounded shoulder side flange

Your 114h definitely has the newell spool. Just that spool is easily worth $75

I only took one picture of the spool before I cleaned this Click gear

Yep, what Ted said in his post above.

Note also the initials "CN" on the flange in your last photo, CN= Carl Newell.

Good eye. For sure Carl Newell spool

Here's some 114H parts(including the carbon fiber drag washers). See anything you want/need, Steve?
