Hi

My brother's daughter (8 yrs) in mind I'm thinking of a spincast reel... do you have any recommendation?

From my own childhood I remember what I had available they were more or less crap...

I know there are quality reels available but are there any... let's say under $30 that would be worth trying?

Any input is welcome.

I personally think that by age 8, a spinner would be fine, and much better than a spin caster that is prone to tangles and twisted, kinked line.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

A spinning reel like the diawa sweepfire is both affordable and easy for a youngster to use.

My daughters are 8 and 9 and use spinners proficiently and are working on conventionals. However, Shakespeare has an all stainless spin caster that I love for new kids. The drag is actually decent and 20 pound braid fits great. I've used them for flounder and on the boat you don't want to worry about how their doing with the reel.
