Shark Hunter

Put your hands a little closer! The guy with the dreadlocks thinks he should ride it like a horse.

Hey Daron, they are dreadlocks he could have been deadlocks the way he behaved.  Yeah, those guys should be more organized.  They took too long to get the hook out and were too close to the sharp end of the shark.  What is the longest dehooker that you know of?  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

saw this before i left for work.  when that shark gets back out in open water, i hope he doesn't decide to even the score with some kayaker.....

At least it looked like it swam away Ok finally. Dominick, My Dehooker is only about 2 foot. I was going to build a longer one, but I'm afraid it won't be as stout as the all stainless one I have. If I have any doubt about getting it out, I'll cut it off with the bolt cutters, then it will come right out without having to pull the barb back through. My main goal is to get him back swimming ASAP.

So if you just cut the leader and leave the hook, doesn't it rust out eventually?? If it does leave a couple of feet between you and the business end of that shark.
Daron, what's the likelihood that shark was able to recover? Seems to me she was outta the water way too long. I don't know I don't shark fish. But I do practice catch and release.

I have used these long-handled de-hookers on sharks, billfish, and many other pelagics w/great success.  They are pricy though.  Actually, I used a bolt cutter and vice grip on all of the tiger's I've released though.  We had them restrained and in tonic mobility for the duration of our scientific research procedures (tissue sample, measure, surgery to implant r-code, conventional, and sat tags).  The dehooker works best with smaller tuna and circle hooks, and on makos or species with jagged teeth.  It is effective with larger circles and j hooks though...prob the best dehooker out there.  POP, here in HI caries them.  i think capt. harry's in Miami has them too.

These guys also make a great long-handled line/wire cutter with replaceable blades.

I think that shark will recover Bob. I know she was out for longer than I would have liked, I don't know how they got her in, but she was still a little green. When I said cut the hook, I meant cut it off and grab the barb end from inside, I have some 18" needle nose for this. It will slide right out.
If the circle works like it is suppose to, it will be buried in the Jawbone right in the corner of the mouth. It takes a tough dehooker to get these out, but it doesn't bleed.

This is one of the reasons I haven't been beach shark fishing yet. I want to go with someone that knows how to safely (for both the fish and the people) release the fish.

Plus, I don't have a kayak, and I'm not paddling baits out on my long board.

I met a guy named Milan about 10 years ago who used to swim his baits out - hundreds of metres at times.
He's a real character and ended up doing a fishing show a year or two ago called Big Angry Fish.
There's a bit about it here:
