I own a few of these reels I have a problem with just the knob on one of them. I must have gotten some type of foreign substance on it now the knob is tacky or has a tacky feel to it. I tried a lightly sandpapering it but that still did not get rid of the tackiness. Does anybody know a fix for this? I just don't want to buy a new knob if I don't have to.

you know those pink or white gum erasers that kids use in grade school?  got any laying around?  if so, try one of those. i have a light/laser combo that i use for my sigs and the light gets clouded up from the gun powder.  i use a pencil eraser to clean up the lens.  works great!
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

I have not failed.  I just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Thanks for the compliments Mike & thank you for the advice Alan. I tried it & it took some of the tackiness away but it still there. I sent a message to Shimano & told them I think it is some type of defect in the material in the knob. I'm not sure if they would be willing give me a new knob if not I may just go ahead & buy one of those aftermarket knobs that I see on ebay. I have a few of them on my Newells & they work good. I just hate the fact that I laid out $30 for a handle & I have to lay out another $25 for a knob that I feel may have deteriorated for some reason. I do have another one that I have no problem with. I'm old school I love counter balanced handles growing up on old Penn reels. I also love fishing with Ambassaduers with CT frames I cant  stand the level winds as well. I guess you can say I'm a old school fisherman with Old school habits. Thanks for the advice & I hope to run into you Mike one of these days.

Oh Oh..... get ready for the great septon war!  shimano will fight you tooth and nail. I've had that problem with their reels for at least a decade.  They said I got sun tan lotion on them. I told them I have never in 53 years used sun tan lotion.  They said I got insect spray on them, I argued that I haven't used insect spray in those same 53 years.  They then decided I used an oil other than their proprietary shimano mineral oil.  Well that could have been it since I think little of their oil.  But nothing in their paperwork or web site says you have to use only shimano oil on there reels.  Their always rude techs told me on the phone that I was the only customer who ever complained about their miracle septon material.  So it ended up with there is no remedy to the problem and they would not cover it by warranty. I wasn't even looking for that, I just wanted replacements. But the models were 6 months out of production and solid to shimano style they no longer had parts for them.  To make matters worse a year or so later I find their rep, "Bantam" on one of those forum product support boards, reporting that many folks had reported the same problem and all of them were from Florida!  His thought was that it had to do with humidity!!  The solution....go buy a pair of 'reel grips'.

you know fishing is i believe the only industry in the world (or any other big place)
where manufactures and retailers can claim stupid data about their products
and get away with it.
i now nominate dominick(dwimp) to gather his colleagues together
and form a united front for salt and freshwater atheletes
to combat these horrendus (was goin gd)terrible, silly, claims
each fisher-person will  donate 50c to the cause
cause its a good idea.
any left over $ after ex,s will be divided between
whoever i think worthy
cheers to all the worthy donatees

You guys were right they did not even bother to reply to my email. I went & bought another after market knob on EBAY. I have bought from this same person before & I feel the quality was good. I got lucky won a bid for $20 a quick fix to the problem. I have to feel like others this company's customer service SU*KS too bad because its one of my favorite reels.
