Hello all and thanks for accepting me.   Back in the 90's I bought a reel for North Sea wrecking off the UK coast.  I has been many years since I have been out on a boat for serious fishing and out comes my Shimano Triton BeastMaster 12/30.  I had notice the free spool was becoming tighter and tighter to the point it would take a 1/2 lb weight to get it to go under the waves.

I have now discovered on line that this is a systemic problem with drag system perishing and that Shimano aftermarket have given up the ghost on supporting this awesome piece of kit.  Is there any one out there who can help me get this back to a usable condition

Many thanks
Dave

welcome, dave!  the tutorial for the tld 30 II should be very close.   http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=38.0  you should have greased carbon fiber drag washers already.  chances are you have bearings that have seized up.  the bearings will be standard stainless steel metric sizes and should be readily available.  it would not surprise me if all four bearings are bad.

The bearings are absolutely fine.  They are smooth as nut as we would say it is more likely the drag as the resistance is smooth.  If I take the leaver totally off it runs like a 7HT as soon as it goes on and it is tightened just enough to hold it in place then the drag seems to kick in.  I only have the 50Lb leaver, lost the other one.

Look at the cam very closely. If the "humps" have smoothed down you'll lose free spool at any more than a very light drag. This can be caused overtime especially if the preset is adjusted when the reel is not in free spool.

Thanks - which part is the cam - do you have the schematics part number ?  If it is this is the situation recoverable.

I would like to say that this reel has probably had no more than 30 or 40 fishing trips and none of them hard

:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Absolutely fine and untouched two nice big pieces of pie that fix snuggle as a bug in to the lever

davercooper

OK, took it apart - big leap for me - only done it once before.  STill plenty of grease in there.

Surprisingly the drag washer is looks sweet, black finely texture fabric appearance. Drag steal plate smooth and clean.

The spool will spin with just the wait for a small barrel swivel to pull the line

Problem found I believe, the CAM is not sitting on the brass nut and is too raised.   looks like I may have tried to remove this nut on the passed and may be stripped it slightly so the cam won't sit right down on it - any ideas how to remedy ?

alantani

the lever has to be in the "free" position, then drop the cam in so that it sits in the lowest possible position.  then the spring and the preset knob.

Thanks Alan, I have a degree of success - I now have a free spool but only until I apply the drag - then I loose the free spool when the drag is pulled back to Free but it releases with a tap on the of the knuckle on the preset knob.  Not ideal but a massive step forward

alantani

in order for the pressure plate to release, the bearings have to slide smoothly on the spool shaft.  clean up the spool shaft a little, lube it well and make sure the bearings slide freely.

I have found the problem - looks like i have lost the pressure release spring :-(
:(

davercooper

what a novice the spring is there between two bearings but it really difficult to get them to move up and down the shaft

davercooper

Of the two bearings on either side of the spring which one or should both be free moving - I can get about 3 mm of movement on what would be the center bearing.  When I put the cog plate on the opposite side of the spool I find it difficult to move - should I try removing one of the 4 large washers on the bearing next to the cog plate ?
